Job description
About the Role
Join the conservation efforts for New Zealand's rarest endemic bird, the Fairy Tern (Tara iti), with fewer than 45 individuals left. This fixed-term full-time position is located at Te Ārai, Auckland, from November 2026 to April 2027. Successful candidates will be part of a small dedicated team involved in captive rearing as well as field and site maintenance activities supporting the species' survival.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct fish husbandry tasks essential for the care of Tara iti chicks.
- Assist zookeepers in monitoring and caring for the captive-bred chicks.
- Carry out bird monitoring and observational duties.
- Create and maintain site infrastructure including solar and aquarium systems.
- Transport fish and equipment between Te Ārai, Warkworth, Auckland Zoo, and other locations.
- Lead public advocacy and education initiatives on Tara iti and shorebird conservation.
- Implement predator control measures including trapping, live dispatch, and ongoing monitoring.
- Perform regular fish resupply missions, occasionally requiring overnight stays.
- Support additional broader programme tasks as needed.
Candidate Profile and Skills
- Relevant experience in conservation or related fields is preferred but not mandatory.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small team.
- Self-driven with a strong work ethic and capability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varied conditions.
- Experience with off-road driving or operating LUV vehicles is beneficial.
- Excellent communication skills, able to engage with volunteers and the public.
- Adaptable problem-solving skills suited to dynamic environments.
- Strong written communication and report writing abilities.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and basic data recording tools.
- Hold a full New Zealand driver's license; manual driving license preferred.
Employment Details and Benefits
- This is a full-time, fixed-term role with a standard 40-hour workweek across a 5-day roster including weekend shifts with two weekdays off.
- Occasional out-of-hours support during emergencies may be required.
- The salary ranges between NZD 61,189 and NZD 67,446 annually, based on experience and skills.
