About the Role
The University of British Columbia is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion, ensuring a supportive environment for all faculty, staff, and students. The Evening Service Worker works under the Custodial Services department, providing essential cleaning and maintenance services across UBC's Vancouver Point Grey Campus facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of cleaning tasks including dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, stripping, waxing, polishing, shampooing, disinfecting, and scrubbing surfaces such as floors, walls, furniture, fixtures, and appliances using hand or powered equipment.
- Maintain sufficient levels of cleaning supplies and equipment and ensure all tools and machinery are in operational condition, requesting replacements as necessary.
- Respond promptly to spill clean-ups and perform spot washing and waxing of floors.
- Clean both interior and exterior surfaces of windows, glass, shades, and blinds.
- Restock consumables like soap, toilet paper, paper towels, and writing materials in designated locations as needed.
- Sweep and clean sidewalks and exterior areas; clear snow when required.
- Collect and dispose of garbage and waste materials appropriately.
- Undertake maintenance duties such as cleaning light fixtures, unclogging toilets, and reporting maintenance or repair needs and any signs of damage or misuse.
- Report unusual or security-related issues, assist during emergencies including building evacuations.
- Set up, move or rearrange furniture and equipment for various functions including exams and ceremonies.
- May handle linen-related duties such as making beds, changing and distributing linens, and managing laundry collection areas.
- Occasionally refill vending machines and manage petty cash transactions.
- Carry out any other tasks aligned with the position's responsibilities.
Qualifications and Experience
- Completion of Grade 10 education coupled with at least one year of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
- Preferred: Building Service Worker certification and a minimum of 1 year relevant custodial experience.
- Basic understanding of custodial regulations, safety, and security policies.
- Competent in operating standard custodial equipment and following instructions to implement updated methods.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively to meet deadlines.
- Strong communication skills to maintain productive relationships with supervisors and colleagues.
- Commitment to respecting diverse perspectives and advancing personal equity, diversity, and inclusion knowledge and skills.
Additional Information
Building Service Workers report to supervisory staff according to shift schedule and receive general supervision with specific guidance on new challenges. The job requires the ability to make judgments regarding task sequencing that may influence service efficiency. There is no supervisory responsibility.
Compensation: Monthly salary ranges from $4,138 to $4,357 CAD.
