Role overview
The University of British Columbia is hiring a Campus Mail Driver/Sorter to support its campus mail operations within Student Housing and Community Services. In this unionized CUPE 116 role, the person in the position will handle the movement, sorting, and delivery of internal and external mail and parcels across on- and off-campus locations.
Compensation and schedule
The monthly pay range for this position is CAD 4,383.00 to CAD 4,596.00. The work schedule runs Monday through Friday. This is an ongoing position, and applications are accepted until 11:59 PM on July 10, 2026.
What the job involves
Working with guidance from the Operations Manager and under the direct supervision of the Campus Mail Coordinators, the role focuses on operating mail trucks, vans, and other delivery vehicles to move mail and parcels to assigned locations. It also includes sorting items, preparing bundles for delivery, assisting with distribution at designated points, and handling registered or courier items that require signatures.
Key duties
- Drive mail trucks, vans, or similar vehicles to deliver mail and parcels to assigned campus and local destinations.
- Collect and deliver mail and parcels from departmental locations on scheduled runs or when called upon.
- Sort incoming and outgoing mail and parcels.
- Prepare, bundle, and organize items for distribution.
- Support mail and parcel distribution at designated service areas.
- Obtain or provide signatures for registered, courier, and other tracked deliveries.
- Check vehicle fluid levels and tire pressure, and help ensure vehicles remain in safe operating condition.
- Answer routine questions about mail and parcel distribution and direct other inquiries to the appropriate staff.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the role’s qualifications and responsibilities.
Working conditions and expectations
Errors in this position may affect the order of tasks, cause small service delays, or result in mail being lost or sent to the wrong place. There is no formal supervisory responsibility, though the role may include explaining work steps to others.
Minimum qualifications
Applicants need a high school diploma, a valid British Columbia driver’s licence, and at least six months of related experience, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
Preferred qualifications
Experience in a large automated mailing environment is considered an advantage. The role also calls for strong customer service, clear communication in both spoken and written form, the ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines, good physical fitness, comfort with computers and productivity software, familiarity with metering and mailing equipment, and sound judgment.
