Role Overview

Join the RAC as a Superflex Roadside Patrol Mechanic, where adaptability and flexibility are key. This position allows you to deliver expert roadside assistance across the Swindon area and surrounding locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert vehicle repair and roadside support to members within your local cluster including Swindon, Royal Wootton Bassett, Marlborough, Cirencester, and Chippenham West.
  • Manage your own RAC van, including stocking tools, essential equipment, and diagnostic kits to respond effectively to a range of vehicle issues.
  • Work a variable shift pattern outside traditional hours – including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and bank holidays – within a broad day range from 6:00 to 2:00.
  • Complete all necessary reports accurately and timely after each job.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Possess either an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance with a minimum of two years’ relevant experience, or alternatively have at least five years’ professional experience as a Vehicle Technician or Mechanic.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence with fewer than six penalty points.

What You'll Receive

  • A competitive base salary of £50,669 per year, with potential to earn up to £57,000 through bonuses and overtime.
  • Advance notification of work rosters: your shifts will be planned roughly 40 hours per week annually, with schedules shared one week ahead and core working hours finalized three days in advance.
  • Full RAC vehicle, fuel card, uniform, tools, and diagnostic kit supplied from day one.
  • Comprehensive benefits including membership share schemes, free RAC Ultimate breakdown cover, car salary sacrifice options (including electric vehicles after one year), generous holidays (starting at 23 days plus bank holidays, increasing with tenure), pension matching contributions up to 6.5%, life insurance up to four times salary (or ten times with flexible benefits), wellness support, and exclusive discounts via the Orange Savings portal.

Candidate Profile

Successful candidates will be attentive problem-solvers with strong people skills, able to stay calm in unpredictable roadside situations and able to foster positive member interactions. Highly flexible and self-reliant, they must be comfortable managing a variety of vehicle faults and customer needs, working independently to find effective solutions and provide excellent service that reflects the RAC’s longstanding reputation.
