Our client, a global investment firm based in Los Angeles, CA, is looking for a Senior Vice President of Data Management to establish and lead a new centralized data management function. This role involves building the team, setting governance and stewardship frameworks, and playing a crucial part in their Data Modernization initiative.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop the charter, operational model, and organizational structure for a centralized data management team encompassing stewardship, governance, and quality.
• Recruit, onboard, and nurture a team including data stewards, analysts, and senior contributors across diverse data domains.
• Create performance measurement systems, career development paths, and foster a culture that attracts and retains top-tier data professionals.
• Act as the principal accountable leader for enterprise-wide data, collaborating closely with Technology, Operations, Compliance, Finance, and Investment teams.
• Implement an enterprise-wide data governance framework covering data ownership, lineage, quality standards, issue resolution, and audit requirements.
• Deploy scalable data controls and continuously improve governance, oversight, and data architecture.
• Set clear data domain ownership across financial instruments, security master data, transactional data, and investor/fund-level information.
• Define and manage data quality service level agreements, validation protocols, and exception handling across front-to-back office systems.
• Ensure integrity of security master data related to various credit and alternative investment products including bonds, loans, CLOs, and private credit.
• Collaborate with Compliance and Risk teams to meet regulatory data accuracy and reporting standards.
• Co-lead the firm’s multi-year Data Modernization program in partnership with an external consulting firm, defining scope, milestones, and success metrics.
• Provide internal expertise to shape the strategic vision and roadmap for data modernization.
• Build internal capabilities to sustain the updated data operating model post-consultancy engagement.
• Partner with Technology teams to specify requirements, evaluate, and select modern data management platforms, ETL/ELT tools, and BI solutions.
• Promote the adoption of automation and AI-enabled data management to optimize manual efforts and enhance analytics.
• Manage vendor relationships with data providers such as Bloomberg, Risk Metrics, and ICE Data Services to ensure cost-efficiency and data quality.
• Represent Data Management in firm-wide strategic and technology investment planning and executive forums.
• Work with senior leadership to prioritize and deliver data initiatives that impact portfolio management, risk decisions, and investor reporting.
• Communicate complex data issues effectively to investment professionals and executive audiences including board members.
• Build alignment and trust within a fast-moving, matrixed investment organization.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields; advanced degrees such as MBA or MS preferred.
• A minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in data management, governance, or operations with significant senior leadership responsibilities.
• Proven track record in establishing and scaling data functions including organizational design and team culture development.
• Experience in hedge funds, asset management, or financial services firms with credit and fixed income focus is highly valuable.
• Strong knowledge of credit instruments including high yield bonds, leveraged loans, CLOs, structured and private credit products.
• Direct experience collaborating with external consultants on large data transformation initiatives.
• Advanced skills in SQL and familiarity with Python or comparable scripting languages for data validation and analysis.
• Knowledge of modern data warehouses and lakehouse technologies (like Snowflake, Databricks) and ETL/ELT tools to effectively interface with technical teams.
• Experience with portfolio management systems (e.g., Charles River, Aladdin) and their data integration needs.
• Expertise in BI and visualization platforms such as Tableau and Power BI to build enterprise-level reporting frameworks.
• Familiarity with data governance and metadata management tools (e.g., Collibra, Informatica).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint for producing senior-level reports and presentations.
• Excellent communication and influencing abilities to clarify complex data topics for diverse senior audiences.
• Demonstrated leadership presence capable of gaining credibility and driving consensus within a complex organizational structure.

Compensation

The annual salary range for this senior leadership role is between $250,000 and $350,000.
