Job Summary

The Scale Operator is responsible for a range of administrative and operational duties related to truck trailer loading, including managing the scale equipment, handling communications, scheduling trucks, and monitoring security cameras in the loadout zone.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow all standard operating procedures (SOPs) linked to the work area.
  • Ensure trucks are loaded precisely to their legal road weight limits.
  • Coordinate with vehicle drivers and loader operators regarding loading details, product types, and salt temperature.
  • Schedule and book trucks as part of logistics planning.
  • Operate various scale equipment including monitors, printers, computers, and cameras at the loadout site.
  • Accurately perform data entry and paperwork handling; distribute documentation as necessary.
  • Answer telephone inquiries and provide required information.
  • Conduct salt sampling procedures as needed.
  • Maintain visitor logs ensuring all guests sign in and out properly.
  • Perform end-of-day checks to confirm hoppers, pits, and augers are cleared.
  • Keep the yard, loadout areas, and facility premises clean and orderly, including roads, washrooms, kitchens, locker rooms, exits, and lighting.
  • Complete equipment checklists, inspections, and Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHA) regularly.
  • Report equipment failures or malfunctions to supervisors or plant managers promptly.
  • Engage in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and incident investigations as required.
  • Undergo safety training and equipment refresher courses as necessary.
  • Consistently use all mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE) on site.
  • Perform other assigned duties including general housekeeping and maintenance.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Completion of a Business Administration certificate plus at least 1 year of experience in a site office setting, or an equivalent mix of education and relevant experience.
  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to operate effectively within a site office environment.
  • Capability to navigate the site year-round in various seasonal conditions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Work Environment

  • The role involves manual labor and requires working outdoors throughout the year.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) usage is mandatory at all times on site.
  • The site experiences varying temperature conditions and noise levels.
  • Periods of high production may require significant sensory focus and can induce mental stress.
