Role overview

An opportunity has opened for a motivated and experienced Band 5 Registered Nurse to join Ward 310 at Royal Derby Hospital in Derby. The ward has 30 beds and provides care for neurology, stroke step-down, and general medical patients in a busy environment where the patient mix changes frequently.

You will support people admitted from the Medical Assessment Unit with neurological and general medical needs, as well as patients moving on from the acute stroke ward when they are ready for step-down recovery. This makes the role varied and fast paced, with strong scope to build clinical confidence and broaden your experience.

You will work within a welcoming, energetic, and collaborative multidisciplinary team focused on delivering excellent, person-centred care.

Main responsibilities

  • Perform full nursing assessments and help create personalised care plans.
  • Provide high-quality clinical care, including administering medicines, taking observations, caring for wounds, and monitoring for any signs of clinical decline.
  • Assist patients with everyday activities while encouraging independence and recovery.
  • Work closely with the multidisciplinary team to deliver joined-up, holistic care.
  • Communicate clearly with patients, families, and colleagues, offering information and reassurance where needed.
  • Keep documentation accurate and up to date in line with NMC expectations and trust procedures.
  • Take part in admission and discharge processes to support safe and efficient patient movement.
  • Help maintain patient safety by following infection prevention, safeguarding, and risk management processes.
  • Contribute to improvement work and the ongoing development of ward services.
  • Support junior colleagues, healthcare assistants, and students through supervision and positive role modelling.
  • Commit to continuous learning, including mandatory training and reflective practice.
