Radiation Safety Officer

Overview

The Radiation Safety Officer is responsible for establishing, operating, and managing the radiation safety program at KAUST to ensure safe and compliant use of radiation in research activities. This role supports university faculty, staff, students, and, when relevant, external partners, by overseeing radiation safety adherence and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain regulatory compliance by aligning the radiation safety program with local laws and international standards.
• Ensure a secure and healthy research and educational environment regarding radiation usage.
• Create and implement the Radiation Safety Program tailored to both regulatory obligations and university operational needs.
• Manage the program to enable continuous radiation research, including acquiring all required licenses and authorizations.
• Act as the main technical advisor to university departments and campus leadership on radiation safety issues.
• Review and approve requests for radioactive material purchases.
• Evaluate research protocols and safety plans involving radiation to ensure compliance and safety.
• Prepare and update scientific and technical documentation, including revising the Radiation Safety Program and related manuals.

Required Skills and Competencies

• Thorough knowledge of radiation safety standards and protocols applicable to university research settings.
• Proficiency in operating and maintaining radiation detection and monitoring instruments.
• Strong command of written and spoken English for effective communication.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific or public health discipline is required.
• Membership in pertinent professional organizations is advantageous.
• Completion of KSA Radiation Protection Officer training is preferred.
• At least six years of professional experience, including program development in radiation safety within university or research environments.
