Position Overview

A national search is in progress to fill the role of Public Defender for Santa Barbara County. This role is pivotal in overseeing all legal service operations within the Public Defender's Office, which operates with a $26 million budget and a team of 121 full-time staff, including legal investigators, social workers, case managers, and client advocates.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and supervise the full range of activities and services provided by the Public Defender's Office.
• Serve as the liaison between the Office of the Public Defender and the County Executive Officer as well as the Board of Supervisors.
• Represent the Public Defender's Office in interactions with other county departments such as the District Attorney's Office and Probation Department.
• Engage with elected officials, community groups, media representatives, and external agencies like the Local Bar Association.
• Participate actively in collaborative groups focused on system improvements, criminal justice innovation, and comprehensive care initiatives.
• Demonstrate strong cooperative and leadership skills to uphold the objectives of both the department and Santa Barbara County.

Qualifications and Additional Information

The selected candidate will receive an annual salary between $262,492 and $350,378, reflecting a 2.5% increase effective July 2026, complemented by yearly performance reviews.
