Role overview
The Process Safety Superintendent serves as a senior technical authority and coach within the process safety function. The position is responsible for driving high-quality hazard studies, strengthening technical standards, and ensuring process safety outputs are rigorous, practical, and aligned with operational risk expectations.
Core responsibilities
- Direct and facilitate advanced hazard and risk reviews, including PHAs, HAZOPs, LOPAs, SIL assessments, and other quantitative risk studies.
- Offer specialist support on process design changes, equipment modifications, and operating practices so that safety is built in from the outset.
- Create, roll out, and continuously update site-level process safety standards, procedures, and guidance documents.
- Carry out pre-startup safety reviews for newly built or modified assets before they are placed into service.
- Review Management of Change submissions from a process safety standpoint and confirm technical adequacy.
- Support incident investigations involving process safety events by identifying technical root causes and contributing factors.
- Coach junior Process Safety Engineers and provide day-to-day technical direction.
- Keep current with evolving process safety tools, methods, and regulatory expectations.
Qualifications and experience
- A bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or another related engineering field is required.
- At least 10 years of focused experience in process safety engineering, including substantial hands-on work leading hazard studies in a heavy industrial setting.
- Strong command of process safety principles and process safety management elements.
- Working knowledge of multiple hazard identification and risk analysis techniques.
- Well-developed analytical ability and a careful, detail-oriented approach to problem solving.
- Strong skills in facilitation, technical documentation, and professional communication.
- Comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- NEBOSH certification is required.
- Certification as a HAZOP leader is required.
- RCA (Root Cause Analyst) certification is required.
