The Packaging Process Operator is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of packaging equipment related to filling and labeling processes, which significantly impact business costs and consumer quality. The goal is to ensure optimal equipment and process effectiveness.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Work effectively in shifts as scheduled.
- Apply core competencies to maximize plant and process performance.
- Manage designated process areas following VPO (Very Powerful Operating) principles and standards.
- Utilize logical and analytical problem-solving skills within an unstructured environment.
- Demonstrate teamwork by communicating, listening, and supporting colleagues.
- Show initiative, energy, and a strong drive to improve and excel beyond standards.
- Operate packaging process equipment adhering to VPO standards.
- Continuously monitor process performance against targets, document short stops, and address out-of-control conditions using VPO tools.
- Record waste and product movements accurately using required documentation or information systems; analyze trends to identify and solve issues.
- Perform autonomous operations as defined for process areas.
- Detect defective equipment and report issues to Process Artisan or Team Leader for resolution.
- Assist experts with running repairs during shifts.
- Conduct mandatory quality checks and tests, logging results appropriately.
- Respond to quality outcomes utilizing prescribed VPO tools.
- Participate actively in shift meetings, contribute ideas, clarify understanding, and document issues and improvement opportunities.
- Be fully aware of and contribute to the team’s objectives and vision.
- Communicate plant-related issues effectively through shift logbooks and handover procedures to incoming teams.
- Comply with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements and VPO safety standards.
- Maintain general housekeeping and 5S standards in production areas.
- Identify unsafe conditions and participate in safety inspections.
- Ensure medical compliance of staff members.
- Work towards achieving shift efficiencies and managing waste within targets.
- Engage in one-on-one meetings and team communications, offering coaching and sharing knowledge.
- Apply VPO problem-solving methodologies to document and resolve issues as they arise.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Post-matric qualification or equivalent, such as a National Diploma or an IOB Certificate/Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical disciplines.
- Experience in packaging within the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector.
- Completion of the SKAP program within 12 months.
- Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with specific machinery relevant to the role.
