Medical Lab Assistant

Position Overview

Brightshores Health System seeks a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) for a part-time temporary role based in Owen Sound, Ontario. Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, the MLA will operate within professional guidelines to collect samples, perform medical lab tests, and manage lab equipment maintenance and setup. This role upholds compliance with the Medical Laboratory Technology Act, the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO), and hospital accreditation standards.

Qualifications and Skills

• Certification as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLPAO or Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science - CSMLS)
• Secondary education or equivalent mandatory
• Phlebotomy experience is advantageous
• Familiarity with laboratory and hospital software systems such as LIS and document management systems
• Strong interpersonal skills to engage effectively with staff physicians, patients, technologists, suppliers, and the Ministry of Health
• Demonstrated initiative and sound judgment under pressure
• Teamwork capabilities and adaptability to fast-changing priorities
• Competency aligned with the CSMLS Medical Laboratory Assistant Competency Profile
• Ability to maintain precise records and documentation
• Willingness and availability for off-shifts, standby, on-call duties, weekends, and multiple site coverage as needed
• Capacity to work in environments with exposure to infection risks, noise, odors, interruptions, and stressful situations
