Learning Specialist

Position Overview

Geffen Academy at UCLA is a university-affiliated school serving students from grades 6 through 12. The Academy fosters a community that values deep academic engagement, creativity, collaboration, and inclusivity. The Learning Specialist works directly with students, parents, educators, and administrators to support students with varied learning needs, helping to ensure equitable access to educational success.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of students with individual learning requirements, including maintaining updated Student Support Plans.
• Deliver executive function coaching, study skills instruction, and coursework support tailored to student needs.
• Collaborate with educators to apply research-based strategies, differentiated instruction, and accommodation plans effectively.
• Engage regularly with students' families to communicate progress and support strategies.
• Participate as an essential member of the Student Support Team alongside Deans and Counselors.

Qualifications and Skills

• 3-5 years’ experience as a learning specialist or special education teacher at the secondary school level.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and service skills, demonstrating patience and professionalism.
• Highly organized, adaptable, and able to manage complex situations.
• Proven ability to effectively collaborate with students, educators, parents, and school administrators.
• Proactive and inclusive in fostering teamwork among colleagues.
• Capable of prioritizing multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously.
• Experience with data handling and report generation; proficiency with Google Docs and Microsoft Office.
• Deep knowledge of child development, curriculum innovation, differentiated instruction, and language related to diverse learners.
• Understanding of public and independent school policies concerning diverse learners, including FERPA regulations.
• Legal knowledge related to counseling and learning service delivery, including confidentiality and safety.
• Commitment to continuously improving professional knowledge related to learning, curriculum, and leadership.
• Insightful understanding of varied teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
• Excellent record-keeping and documentation skills, anticipating student and family needs professionally.
• Expertise in developing Student Support Plans for neurodiverse learners with appropriate accommodations.

Education and Certifications

• Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, special education, or a related field (Required).
• Master's degree in education, special education, or a related field (Preferred).

Additional Employment Conditions

• Employment contingent upon a satisfactory background check and Live Scan clearance prior to starting.
• Candidates must be at least 18 years old to be hired.
• Continued employment requires a satisfactory tuberculosis test.
• The position is classified as a mandatory reporter under California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA), requiring signature acknowledgment.

Working Hours

Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
