About Contact Energy and the Role
Contact Energy is a proud generator of renewable electricity, utilizing New Zealand's notable hydro assets, including those on the Clutha River. The Clutha hydro scheme is crucial in supplying dependable and renewable energy to homes and businesses throughout Aotearoa, aiding the country's movement toward a low-carbon future. Situated in Clyde, the team manages vital infrastructure amidst Central Otago’s striking landscapes, combining technical skill, innovation, and teamwork to maintain these assets.
As a Hydro Generation Technician (Mechanical), you will be part of a tight-knit group dedicated to maintaining and operating important plant machinery to ensure consistent reliability, safety, and operational flexibility. Your daily duties will encompass hands-on maintenance, safe isolation and operation of plant, troubleshooting mechanical issues, collaborating to enhance maintenance plans, supporting plant operations during high-demand periods, and contributing ideas to improve long-term asset performance. The position offers diverse challenges, significant responsibilities, and the opportunity to work with expert colleagues who are passionate about sustainable energy.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess a trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering, a trade certificate, or similar experience relating to maintenance, plant operations, or heavy industry. Prior experience with power generation assets, heavy rotating machinery, hydro technology, or comparable industrial settings is highly desirable. Relevant plant operation certifications will be advantageous. Beyond technical qualifications, strong communication skills, the ability to build trusted relationships, calmness under pressure, and practical problem-solving are essential. Familiarity with condition monitoring, systematic maintenance planning, inventory control, or contractor oversight is beneficial but not mandatory.
