About Science for Africa Foundation

Science for Africa (SFA) Foundation is a pan-African nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing science and innovation across Africa. Its mission is to support scientists and strengthen the science ecosystem on the continent, believing that science is essential for Africa's sustainable development.

Role Purpose

The Head of Communications is a senior leadership role tasked with guiding the Foundation's comprehensive communications efforts. This position works closely with executives and senior managers to enhance the Foundation's reputation, visibility, and influence. The role consolidates corporate and scientific communications, media relations, digital engagement, and strategic campaigns into a unified institutional voice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead an integrated communications strategy promoting the Foundation's mission, reputation, and impact.
  • Serve as the principal advisor on communications strategy, reputation management, thought leadership, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Manage corporate and science communications ensuring messaging quality and alignment with strategic goals.
  • Lead executive visibility initiatives, media engagement, and digital content strategies.
  • Translate complex scientific progress and program outcomes into engaging narratives for diverse audiences.
  • Oversee internal communications to boost staff engagement and support organizational change.
  • Establish communications governance frameworks including editorial and brand policies to assure consistency and quality.
  • Manage reputational risks and prepare for crisis communications.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing communications team, managing resources and budgets effectively.
  • Monitor and report on communications impact, using insights for continuous improvement.

Qualifications and Experience

  • At least 10 years of experience in strategic communications with leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate corporate, science, internal, digital, and media communications successfully.
  • Strong executive advisory experience on positioning, reputation, and crisis management.
  • Ability to simplify complex scientific, policy, and development information into powerful narratives.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Africa’s science and innovation landscape.
  • Proven capacity to build partnerships and navigate multicultural environments.
  • Master's degree in communications or related fields; Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Membership in a reputable professional communications institution.

Terms of Appointment

This is a regular full-time position based onsite in Nairobi, Kenya, with a renewable three-year contract. The Head of Communications will report to the Chief of Staff in the CEO's Office and will supervise the Corporate Communications Manager, Science Communications Manager, and Senior Communications Officers.
