Position Overview
The Appellate Project (TAP), operating under the Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law at New York University School of Law, is seeking an Executive Director. This hybrid role requires approximately 2–3 days per month at NYU School of Law in New York City, though the position is remote with a preference for candidates located in New York City or Washington, DC.
TAP is dedicated to cultivating diverse and emerging leaders in the appellate legal field through mentorship, professional development, and community-building initiatives, with a focus on creating a judiciary reflective of diverse communities.
About The Appellate Project
Since its inception in 2019 and transition to an NYU initiative, TAP has provided over 600 law students with mentorship, clerkship assistance, skill development, and networking within the appellate bar. TAP's extensive network includes judges, clerks, attorneys, alumni, and legal professionals committed to fostering inclusivity and increased access in the appellate profession.
The Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law at NYU School of Law supports research, advocacy, litigation, and education to promote systemic change concerning race and inequality, enhancing TAP’s ability to expand its national reach and impact.
Role Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership to TAP, guiding program implementation and organizational growth.
- Develop and strengthen partnerships with NYU leadership, funders, legal professionals, alumni, volunteers, and other stakeholders.
- Lead fundraising initiatives and secure resources to support TAP’s mission and sustainable growth.
- Represent TAP publicly and collaborate as a thought leader within the appellate and broader legal communities.
- Work closely with the Faculty Director of the Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law to align TAP's goals with institutional priorities.

The ideal Executive Director will be a strategic, entrepreneurial leader with strong emotional intelligence and operational expertise. A commitment to equity, access, and diversity in the legal profession is essential, alongside demonstrated fundraising capabilities and collaborative leadership skills.
Salary and Benefits
The position offers an annual salary range of $135,000 to $150,000, complemented by a comprehensive benefits package.
