About Rocket Lab
Rocket Lab is a comprehensive space enterprise providing responsive launch services, spacecraft design and manufacturing, payloads, and satellite components. The company supports critical space missions globally, including scientific research, Earth monitoring, climate change initiatives, national security, and technological demonstrations. Their Electron rocket is the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket, having delivered over 230 satellites, while developing the Neutron medium-lift reusable launch vehicle for larger constellation deployment. Rocket Lab's Space Systems division delivers satellites and payloads, some selected for NASA's Moon and Mars missions.
Role Overview
The Neutron Development Engineer is integral to advancing vehicle architecture across multiple domains such as structural (propellant tanks, interstage, fairings), mechanical (stage separation, landing, aerodynamic control), fluid (pressurant, propellant management, ignition, HVAC), and thermal systems. This role involves collaborating with analysis and manufacturing teams to create CAD conceptual designs for metallic and composite parts and assemblies, conduct developmental and qualification testing, refine designs, and ensure all components satisfy functional and performance criteria.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and iterate conceptual CAD models of mechanical structures and mechanisms for the Neutron launch vehicle.
- Identify and resolve technical challenges promptly to maintain project momentum and safety.
- Engage in mentoring relationships to enhance both technical and interpersonal skills.
- Prepare detailed drawing packages with a focus on manufacturability, along with technical reports.
- Develop and maintain design documentation including FMEAs, P&IDs, and ICDs.
- Assist in defining design requirements and support structural and mechanism testing of components.
- Develop test plans, oversee test activities, analyze test data, and document results to verify compliance with requirements.
- Design and produce test jigs and fixtures to facilitate component and assembly testing.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in aerospace, mechanical, or mechatronic engineering.
- Between three to five years of experience designing high-performance mechanical systems.
- Proficiency with CAD software including NX (preferred), Fibersim (preferred), SolidWorks, or CATIA.
- Ability to perform effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Strong communication skills with a collaborative team-oriented approach.
- Excellent analytical abilities with the capacity to understand complex systems and make sound decisions.
- A determined mindset with the ability to think swiftly and make accurate judgments.
Desired Additional Experience
- Knowledge or experience with metallic or composite structures.
- Experience in mechanisms design.
- Familiarity with pressurized systems.
- Understanding of fluid systems.
Work Culture and Expectations
Rocket Lab champions a work environment driven by innovation, grit, and teamwork. Employees face challenging tasks with resilience, prioritize delivery over obstacles, and support colleagues with humility and determination. The company values relentless innovation, collaboration, and high performance in a fast-paced setting.
