Job description
Position Overview
The Oregon Department of Administrative Services (DAS) seeks Custodians to maintain cleanliness and safety in state buildings located in Salem, Oregon. These roles focus on ensuring facilities are hygienic, secure, and welcoming for staff and visitors, using eco-friendly cleaning products and responding promptly to emergent situations.
Key Responsibilities
- Thoroughly clean and maintain floors by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and detailed care of hard surfaces and carpets.
- Sanitize and restock restrooms and kitchens to ensure readiness for use.
- Perform general maintenance tasks including emptying trash, dusting, cleaning windows, walls, stairwells, and common areas.
- Assist building operations by replacing lightbulbs, recycling, cleaning loading areas, and reporting maintenance concerns.
- Respond swiftly to emergencies such as spill clean-ups, weather-related issues, and urgent tenant requests.
Working Environment
- Requires standing and walking throughout the entire shift across various surfaces including concrete, tile, and carpet.
- Involves repetitive physical activities including lifting, pushing, and pulling custodial equipment up to 50 pounds, as well as bending, reaching, twisting, and occasional ladder use.
- May include outdoor work during bad weather and the use of cleaning chemicals.
Qualifications and Desired Attributes
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- At least four months of custodial experience with operation of required cleaning equipment.
- Physical capacity to handle lifting and prolonged periods of standing/walking as described.
- Proven reliability with consistent attendance and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to organize daily workloads, prioritize tasks, and complete duties within schedule.
- Strong communication skills to provide respectful, quality service to employees, tenants, and visitors.
- Proactive problem-solving abilities and attention to service needs.
- Safe use of hand tools, cleaning agents, ladders, and other custodial equipment.
- Team-oriented mindset to collaborate effectively in a shared work environment.
