Role overview

The Communications Officer supports the design, execution and review of communication plans and activities across the department. This includes creating printed and digital content, multimedia assets and event support. The role reports to the Manager, Veterans, Carers, Volunteers and Inclusive Communities and sits within the Strategic Communications team in the Public Engagement Branch.

As part of the team, you will help deliver strategic communications for priority initiatives, major programs, policy work and State Budget measures. You will work closely with digital, social, corporate, creative, media, Ministerial events and advertising colleagues to develop materials and keep information flowing between policy and communications functions.

The position also involves building strong working relationships with business units and program areas, as well as with colleagues across the Public Engagement Branch.

Depending on operational needs, you may be asked to assist other teams in the branch, including joining out-of-hours media and emergency rosters and supporting public emergencies, major campaigns and other high-priority work.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the planning, delivery and assessment of communication strategies and activities, including print, online and multimedia content as well as departmental events.
  • Provide communications guidance and work with teams across the department to produce effective material that meets high standards of writing, design and visual presentation and follows departmental and Victorian Government requirements.
  • With supervision, coordinate with suppliers and contractors to help deliver communication products and projects on time, within budget and aligned with stakeholder and client expectations.

Application requirements

  • Submit a CV and a cover letter of no more than 2 pages explaining how your background matches the Key Selection Criteria.
  • Applications should be lodged online, and supporting documents may be uploaded in .doc, .docx, .pdf, .txt or .rtf formats.
  • You must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • Work eligibility will be verified during recruitment.
  • Preferred candidates will need to complete pre-employment checks, including a national police check and misconduct screening.

Additional information

The department may ask the successful candidate to support public emergencies, large-scale communication campaigns and other priority projects as part of broader branch responsibilities. Out-of-hours media and emergency roster participation may also be required.

About the team

The Strategic Communications team leads communications for priority projects, key programs, policy initiatives and State Budget activities, and plays a central coordination role across the Public Engagement Branch.
