Job description
Job Summary
The Cleaner will function as part of a team responsible for maintaining cleanliness across various premises designated by the line manager. The primary goal is to uphold hygiene and sanitation standards through a range of cleaning activities.
Main Responsibilities
- Perform floor maintenance including sweeping, suction cleaning, mopping, dry buffing, spray cleaning, waxing, machine scrubbing, drying, stripping, and re-polishing using proper equipment.
- Remove stains and clean soft surfaces such as carpets and mats employing appropriate methods.
- Clean toilet and shower spaces along with associated fixtures and fittings.
- Wash and dust ledges, walls, fixtures, fittings, and internal surfaces up to a height of 3.35 meters.
- Polish furniture where applicable.
- Empty and sanitize internal litter bins and transport waste to designated disposal areas.
General Conditions and Compliance
- Adhere to all relevant Health and Safety regulations including the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978, COSHH regulations, Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments, and codes of practice.
- Carry out duties inherent to the job and provide coverage for colleagues during absences in accordance with Education Authority procedures.
- Report any absences and complete necessary documentation endorsed by the Building Supervisor.
- Wear protective clothing/workwear and flat-soled enclosed-toe shoes during cleaning duties.
- Use cleaning equipment responsibly, reporting any faults promptly.
- Complete all administrative paperwork related to cleaning tasks.
- Perform additional tasks within the same job grade as assigned.
Training
- Undergo all mandatory and refresher training pertinent to current and higher grade duties as per organisational requirements.
Additional Notes
The job description is subject to review and may be adjusted to meet operational changes. Other similar duties may be assigned consistent with the post grade. Candidate Guidance

Essential Criteria
- Minimum of three months’ verifiable experience in a cleaning role.
- Awareness and knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, machinery, and relevant Health and Safety requirements including COSHH.
- Good communication, teamwork, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently to deadlines and required standards.
Desirable Criteria
- At least one year of cleaning experience.
- Experience operating commercial cleaning machinery such as buffing machines.
Criminal Background Disclosure
This role involves working in regulated activity with children; thus, candidates must complete an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background at their own expense prior to appointment.
