Role overview
This opportunity is being handled for a partner employer, which will review applications and manage the next stages. The hiring company is seeking a CTO in Australia to help steer the technical future of an ambitious open-source virtual world powered by decentralized technology.
In this senior leadership role, you will shape the technology roadmap, strengthen engineering systems and practices, and guide the growth of a next-generation multiplayer platform. The position is fully remote and spans a global team, with a strong focus on architecture, security, product evolution, and long-term innovation. It combines executive-level strategy with practical technical involvement in a fast-moving, emerging tech environment.
Key responsibilities
- Set the technology direction for the business and ensure engineering efforts stay aligned with the broader product strategy.
- Lead the design and ongoing improvement of scalable architecture, front-end systems, and core technical frameworks that can support platform expansion.
- Put in place reliable engineering workflows and production standards, including system administration, infrastructure, security, and operational discipline.
- Recruit, coach, and develop a high-performing engineering team, encouraging technical depth, teamwork, and continuous learning.
- Own engineering planning, staffing decisions, and development priorities to keep delivery efficient and on schedule.
- Work closely with cross-functional partners to refine product capabilities while protecting technical quality and system performance.
- Introduce new ideas and tools by assessing emerging technologies and applying strong practices across build, release, and operations work.
- Provide senior technical guidance through architecture reviews, code quality improvements, and decision-making on complex engineering issues.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in game development, including a proven background in senior technical leadership or technology management.
- Demonstrated success in growing engineering teams, setting up development processes, and leading technology strategy in early-stage or fast-scaling environments.
- Strong hands-on knowledge of Three.js, React, Solidity, JavaScript, and C++, along with solid architecture and system design skills.
- Good understanding of multiplayer systems, real-time applications, distributed architectures, and modern web technologies.
- Experience managing infrastructure, system administration, application security, and live production operations.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making abilities, with the capacity to guide and mentor teams effectively.
- Comfort working in a fully remote, globally distributed setup while handling several priorities and technical initiatives at once.
- Experience with more than one programming language is a strong plus.
- Prior work on a custom game engine, or contributions to advanced game engine development, would be a major advantage.
