Role Overview
The Assistant Project Manager (APM) assists in planning, executing, financially managing, and ensuring successful delivery of commercial construction projects. As a crucial member of the team, the APM coordinates activities from preconstruction through closeout while upholding safety, quality, schedule, and budget standards. This position reports to the regional office in Las Vegas but requires onsite presence at a Mammoth Lakes, California project three days weekly. The role provides a clear career progression path towards becoming a Project Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Adhere strictly to WPI’s policies, safety procedures, and corporate safety programs.
- Engage actively in project-specific safety planning and hazard management onsite.
- Support project setup, planning, and execution from contract awarding to project closeout.
- Review contracts, scopes, drawings, and specifications to identify risks, opportunities, and key obligations.
- Assist in vendor, subcontractor, and supplier proposal assessment and buyout processes.
- Coordinate procurement to ensure timely delivery of materials, equipment, engineering, and subcontracted labor.
- Manage project documentation including RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and other necessary paperwork.
- Contribute to scheduling activities and stakeholder coordination.
- Represent WPI in meetings with owners, architects, contractors, subcontractors, and internal teams.
- Help manage project budgets, forecasting, change orders, and cost monitoring.
- Process change requests while tracking schedule and budget impacts.
- Analyze production reports and support field operations in meeting productivity targets.
- Collaborate with foremen, superintendents, and project managers to track labor and project progress.
- Assist with monthly billing, collections, invoice review, and approval.
- Maintain precise project records, minutes, correspondence, and reporting documentation.
- Identify and communicate risks, conflicts, and potential issues proactively to avoid project delays or failures.
- Support quality control to ensure compliance with contract requirements.
- Coordinate closeout deliverables such as punch lists, warranties, O&M manuals, and as-built documentation.
- Build and sustain positive relationships with clients, general contractors, architects, consultants, suppliers, and internal teams.
Candidate Requirements
Essential Qualifications:
- Minimum 2-3 years experience in commercial construction roles such as Project Engineer, Construction Coordinator, or Assistant Project Manager.
- Ability to be onsite three days per week at Mammoth Lakes, California project.
- Strong analytical skills to assess project data, identify risks, and implement proactive strategies.
- Knowledgeable in commercial construction methodologies, contracts, and delivery processes.
- Experience handling project documentation including RFIs, submittals, change orders, and procurement.
- Comprehension of budgeting, forecasting, cost tracking, and financial reporting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Highly organized with strong ability to multitask and manage time effectively.
- Capable of developing and maintaining collaborative professional relationships with clients and team members.
- Ability to work autonomously and contribute within a team environment.
- Customer service oriented with a dedication to client satisfaction.
- Flexible and adaptable to fast-changing priorities in a construction setting.
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving capabilities.
- Fluent in English for clear communication.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Construction Science, Business, Engineering, Accounting, or related field.
- Experience in commercial drywall, metal-stud framing, or acoustical ceiling tile (ACT) systems.

Compensation is commensurate with experience and certifications, with the California pay range between $60,000 and $80,000 per year.
