Role Overview

We seek a Technical Writer to lead the documentation for Nabu Casa's Hardware and Cloud offerings. This position carries significant ownership and impact, being responsible for creating and maintaining documentation accessible to a global user and developer community. Tasks include creating guides from setup instructions to deep technical API documentation, collaborating closely with engineers to translate complex technology into clear content, and reducing support reliance.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the full documentation lifecycle for Nabu Casa Hardware and Cloud ensuring accuracy and easy discoverability.
• Develop documentation aligned with product launch cycles for new features and integrations.
• Partner closely with engineers to validate technical accuracy, minimizing their documentation workload.
• Continuously evaluate and update existing documentation by identifying outdated or incomplete information and enhancing clarity and organization.
• Establish and uphold documentation standards, style guides, and templates to maintain consistency across community contributions.
• Prioritize and address feedback from users, support, and internal teams to enhance documentation impact.
• Contribute to developer-facing documentation including API guides and integration materials supporting the broader Open Home Foundation (OHF) community.
• Monitor documentation effectiveness through community feedback and support ticket trends, reporting on these regularly.

Required Qualifications

• Proven expertise in technical writing, especially in developer or product documentation, supported by a professional portfolio.
• Ability to comprehend and interpret code (Python, YAML, REST APIs) sufficiently to write precise technical documents independently.
• Knowledge of smart home hardware and electronics, including basic troubleshooting capabilities.
• Experience with documentation-as-code tools and workflows such as Git, Markdown, and static site generators like MkDocs or Docusaurus.
• Self-driven with the capacity to identify documentation needs proactively.
• Strong skills in engaging technical stakeholders to efficiently extract and verify information.

Desirable Experience

• Familiarity with Home Assistant or similar open-source/self-hosted software platforms.
• Track record in managing documentation within community-driven projects involving external contributors.
• A methodical approach to auditing extensive documentation and prioritizing improvements.
• Comfort working asynchronously in distributed, remote-first teams.

Benefits and Work Environment

Nabu Casa operates fully remotely and employs individuals globally, offering salaried employment in their respective countries. The role is full-time (40 hours weekly) with no fixed schedule but encourages at least three hours overlap for team communication. Reporting is to the VP Commercial.

Compensation

Salaries are targeted at the 75th percentile of respective markets and vary by location, experience, and qualifications. Approximate annual salary ranges for primary countries include:

• Ireland: 52800 - 70500 EUR
• Italy: 54000 - 64400 EUR
• Poland: 150000 - 215000 PLN
• Portugal: 47900 - 61200 EUR
• Romania: 215000 - 275000 RON
• Spain: 50500 - 63600 EUR
• UK: 57100 - 73800 GBP

Compensation for other countries may be discussed during the interview process.
