About the Role

This role belongs to the Strategy, Growth and Planning Group dedicated to proactive and strategic oversight of city planning and development with a focus on sustainable, inter-generational outcomes. As a Senior Planner based in Hamilton, New Zealand, you will participate in pivotal projects shaping the city’s growth and advise on resource management within one of the country's fastest-growing communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and process intricate resource consent applications that influence significant city development.
  • Lead discussions before application submissions to guide prospective applicants.
  • Provide technical oversight, mentoring, and support to fellow planners within the team.
  • Critically assess complex planning reports and ensure compliance with legislation.
  • Offer expert interpretation of the District Plan and Resource Management Act as well as associated legislation.
  • Support council planning hearings including preparation of evidence when necessary.
  • Engage in cross-departmental projects facilitating sustainable growth and community development.
  • Collaborate internally across council departments to deliver practical, customer-centric planning solutions.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in urban planning and resource management with strong technical knowledge and excellent communication skills. A collaborative spirit and commitment to mentoring junior staff are essential alongside commercial awareness and a passion for community-focused outcomes.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in planning, resource management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of seven years' professional experience in planning and resource management.
  • Deep understanding of the Resource Management Act, Local Government Act, and associated legislation.
  • Membership with the New Zealand Planning Institute (NZPI) is required.
  • Proven ability to manage complex planning challenges and risk assessment.
  • Strong judgement skills for legislative interpretation leading to practical solutions.
  • Excellent stakeholder communication, negotiation, and engagement abilities.
