Science Technician I – Engineering

Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia seeks a Science Technician I to join the Faculty of Science, Engineering. This permanent full-time role is part of Bargaining Unit 179, Group 7, offering a salary range of $47,988 to $58,659 annually. Job Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on laboratory equipment, assessing operational status and coordinating professional repairs as necessary.
• Maintain and update student laboratory manuals annually in collaboration with faculty to ensure continuous improvement.
• Manage the lending process of equipment and computers for student use.
• Train students and laboratory demonstrators on safe and emergency usage of lab tools and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
• Keep comprehensive safety documentation, including safety test outcomes and incident reports.
• Assist faculty in procuring equipment and materials required for labs.
• Support the setup and execution of engineering demonstrations during outreach events such as high school workshops, university open houses, and community presentations both onsite and offsite.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or related fields); advanced degrees or equivalent experience considered.
• At least two years of relevant experience in an engineering laboratory setting.
• Hands-on experience with power and hand tools.
• Strong oral and written communication skills complemented by excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management abilities with keen attention to detail.
• Programming skills and proficiency in CAD modeling software.
• Knowledge of safety procedures with familiarity of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations is advantageous.
• Experience with electronics and robotics is a plus.
