Overview
This role is a critical part of the Health, Environment, Safety, and Security (HESS) team at a global destination operated by a leading cruise corporation. The Safety Supervisor oversees all occupational health and safety functions at the port, ensuring full adherence to regulatory standards via active monitoring, program execution, and daily supervision. The position involves conducting safety inspections, validating corrective measures, leading emergency drills, managing safety documentation, and supervising a frontline safety team.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in developing and enforcing detailed occupational health and safety programs that meet regulatory and company standards.
- Drive continuous safety program enhancements and ensure hazard identification, risk assessments, and incident prevention strategies are effective.
- Support change management evaluations to guarantee safety controls are established before process modifications.
- Oversee high-risk work permits, verify field controls, and close out safety documentation.
- Ensure contractor compliance through pre-qualification, onboarding, supervision, and performance tracking.
- Coordinate safety onboarding and conduct safety briefings and toolbox talks with supervisors.
- Manage chemical safety protocols including SDS handling, proper labeling, storage compatibility, and spill response preparedness.
- Conduct scheduled safety inspections and job task observations to detect hazards and unsafe behaviors, facilitating immediate coaching.
- Monitor emergency response equipment condition and availability to ensure operational readiness and compliance.
- Lead and guide direct reports by assigning work, evaluating performance, and maintaining procedural compliance.
- Support on-the-job training initiatives alongside supervisors to educate new team members.
- Deliver educational programs promoting environmental responsibility and protection of natural resources.
- Coordinate fire drills, maintain fire safety systems, and collaborate with relevant departments for emergency management.
- Engage stakeholders in safety culture initiatives, awareness campaigns, and safety training delivery.
- Ensure proper provision, usage, and documentation of personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff.
- Maintain comprehensive records of all safety incidents and assist with investigations to derive corrective actions.
- Develop and maintain emergency preparedness plans including hazard identification, risk assessment, and response protocols.
- Organize and lead emergency drills, train personnel on emergency procedures, and conduct after-action reviews to improve response effectiveness.
- Propose improvements to HESS policies, conduct administrative tasks such as scheduling and reporting, and support supervisory duties as assigned.
- Identify maintenance requirements for facilities and escalate as appropriate.
Qualifications and Skills
- Formal education is preferred but not mandatory; significant safety management experience or professional certifications such as ISO 45001, NEBOSH, or NIOSH are valued equally.
- At least 2 to 4 years of relevant experience in safety management within cruise, hospitality, port, or industrial sectors.
- Minimum of one year of leadership experience supervising teams.
- Proficient in safety regulations and international standards including ISO 45001 and similar frameworks.
- Strong communication, leadership, analytical, and organizational abilities.
- Capable of working autonomously and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
- Physical fitness and capability to work outdoors for extended periods, including standing for long durations.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and competent in data management and reporting tools.
- Exceptional time management, multitasking, and critical thinking skills with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Availability to work shifts if required at any destination.
Language & Communication
Proficiency in English is essential for reading, writing, understanding procedures, providing instructions, and engaging effectively with colleagues and management.
