Role Overview

We are looking for a Quantitative Trader to manage and optimize trading activities for Base’s retail load book and battery fleet. Initially, the focus will be to develop a short-term trading strategy (up to 30 days ahead) specifically for ERCOT, with near-term plans to extend strategies to PJM and other Independent System Operators (ISOs). You will also enhance Base’s existing long-term portfolio exposure approach, employing rigorous portfolio construction methods, in addition to contributing to the Trading & Risk team’s fundamental long-term price outlooks.

Responsibilities

• Execute trades on short-term power products to realize additional margins, with the possibility to expand into longer-term and structured trades.
• Enhance Base's hedge strategy using a portfolio-based approach to manage risk exposure across the battery fleet and retail load portfolio.
• Participate in developing long-term price forecasts grounded in market fundamentals such as congestion, transmission constraints, and load-generation balance to inform trading and hedging decisions.
• Clearly communicate market perspectives, trading strategies, and profit and loss drivers to leadership to influence desk strategies.
• Analyze capacity markets and other structured products within ERCOT and upcoming markets like PJM to identify trading or hedging opportunities.

Qualifications

• Experience trading power products within banks, utilities, or merchant trading desks, with hands-on involvement in forward curves, hedge instruments, and short-term markets.
• Proficiency in developing statistical and pricing models independently, particularly using Python.
• Proven background in portfolio construction, creating hedges across multiple positions rather than isolated trades.
• Strong fundamental insight into market dynamics including congestion, transmission limitations, and load-generation interactions impacting price formation.
• Extensive experience in at least one ISO market, with current emphasis on ERCOT and plans for PJM expansion.
• Ability to be an independent contributor within a small, fast-paced team environment without reliance on dedicated analysts.

The Team

The Markets group oversees maximizing grid-support performance and profitability of Base’s distributed battery fleet. This includes device communication with balancing authorities, telemetry data analysis, fleet aggregation algorithms, economic dispatch, and wholesale energy market portfolio management. The team is multidisciplinary, including physicists, economists, computer scientists, and engineers. Success involves simultaneously managing operational intensity and forward-looking automated control development.
