Role Summary

The Head of Product Design will navigate one of the most intriguing UX challenges in software today — balancing the powerful features beloved by advanced users with an accessible experience for newcomers. This pivotal leadership role partners directly with executives and influences strategic directions and design excellence across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Champion a unified quality standard for design work, leading the team toward consistently excellent output.
Develop review protocols and critique sessions that foster shared language and confidence in design decisions.
Enhance the design system and quality assurance procedures alongside team growth.
Address the UX challenge of reducing the platform’s learning curve while maintaining advanced capabilities.
Integrate design thinking into strategic product roadmaps to proactively identify user needs.
Guide n8n’s shift toward broader, less technical user audiences with strong design leadership.
Forge collaborative partnerships with Product, Engineering, and leadership teams to embed design as a core contributor at all product stages.
Lead and expand a design team currently comprising about 14 members including Design Leads, individual contributors, Design Engineering, and UX Research.
Define team structure, career pathways, and professional development frameworks to promote clarity and growth.
Foster a culture of high standards, candid feedback, and supportive teamwork.
Manage hiring processes and plan headcount to support scalable team growth without compromising quality.
Establish continuous and pragmatic UX research-integrated practices to inform product decisions with customer insights, data, and community feedback.
Focus research on critical metrics such as activation, retention, adoption, and onboarding confidence.
Advocate for practical AI application within the design organization, from prototyping and research analysis to QA and workflow optimization.
Encourage the team to stay current and curious amidst the rapidly evolving AI product landscape.
Lead by example with a thoughtful, adaptable, and enthusiastic work style that embraces change.

Required Qualifications

Proven leadership in product design managing managers and senior designers, with experience driving performance and improving both design quality and business results.
Experience designing complex or developer-focused products demanding deep UX and product understanding.
Authoritative craftsmanship in design quality, capable of upholding high standards and articulating excellence clearly.
Ability to influence strategy by making design a peer in product discussions and driving collaborative decision-making.
Strong structured problem-solving skills within ambiguous environments, confidently defining and executing plans.
Knowledgeable in AI, automation, or related technologies to create trustworthy, usable AI-era products.
Skilled in integrating research into product development, ensuring insights guide team decisions rather than acting as isolated artifacts.
Data-informed mindset using analytics, research, and customer feedback over subjective preference for making product decisions.
Expertise in organizational design, career path creation, performance management, and handling challenging personnel discussions professionally.

Preferred Attributes

Background in open-source, community-driven, or fair-code products with an understanding of designing for strong user communities.
Fluency in design engineering or front-end technologies to collaborate effectively on design system implementation.
Experience operating within remote-first environments, creating effective design rituals and QA across distributed teams.
Exposure to growth-focused design efforts such as user activation, onboarding experiences, templates, or product-led expansion.
Exceptional Design Managers ready to transition to a head of role, demonstrating fundamental leadership capabilities.
