Genetic Counselor - Reproductive Medical Genetics

Job Overview

Mount Sinai Morningside is actively seeking a full-time, dynamic, and detail-oriented Genetic Counselor specializing in reproductive medical genetics. This role involves serving a high-volume and diverse patient base by delivering comprehensive preconception and prenatal genetic counseling. The counselor will address a wide variety of clinical indications such as advanced maternal age, abnormal screening results, ultrasound anomalies, family history of genetic conditions, and positive carrier screening results.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough counseling sessions for patients who are pregnant or planning pregnancy, discussing teratogen exposures, abnormal ultrasound results, blood test anomalies, carrier status, advanced parental age, and prenatal testing options including invasive and non-invasive procedures.
• Provide ongoing support and follow-up genetic counseling through a hybrid model combining in-person consultations and telehealth sessions, performed in compliance with HIPAA from secure home locations as needed.
• Mentor and supervise genetic counseling students, fellows, residents, and medical students during clinical rotations in reproductive genetics.
• Prepare detailed clinical documentation, including patient notes, summary letters, and consultation reports for physicians.
• Collaborate with administrative staff to prioritize patient scheduling and ensure timely access to appropriate genetic counseling and physician services.
• Interpret and report prenatal and carrier screening results to healthcare providers and patients.
• Respond to daily inquiries from physicians on clinical management, genetic testing indications, and interpretation of genetic information related to prenatal and obstetric care.
• Manage logistics related to specimen handling, laboratory coordination, billing issues, and facilitate communication between diagnostic labs and referring doctors to ensure accurate and timely test result delivery and follow-up.
• Provide education on genetics to medical and graduate students, residents, and other healthcare learners.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years experience in genetic counseling; candidates with over 5 years are preferred.
• Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling obtained within 3 years of graduation from an accredited Genetic Counseling Program.
• Proficiency in Spanish language is preferred to better serve diverse patient populations.

Compensation and Employment Details

The position offers an annual salary range between $85,000 and $131,538, depending on factors such as experience and education. This range excludes bonuses and other forms of compensation.
