Role overview

The Queensland Government is seeking a Forensic Technician to support laboratory examination of forensic exhibits and samples. In this position, you will follow established procedures to help generate test outcomes and provide guidance to supervisors, clients, and other stakeholders when needed.

You will contribute to a statewide forensic biology service by making sure laboratory work is carried out in line with Forensic Science Queensland standards, with a strong focus on efficiency, accuracy, and compliance.

If you meet the qualifications and conditions outlined for the position, you are encouraged to submit an application.

Key responsibilities

  • Follow workplace service standards, safety requirements, and health and safety procedures to maintain a safe and high-quality working environment.
  • Deliver technical support for forensic biology analysis and interpretation, aligned with your level of laboratory experience.
  • Carry out forensic testing and related tasks using validated accredited methods, equipment, and standards within a multidisciplinary team, while working under professional and ethical guidelines and gradually taking on greater accountability as experience grows.
  • Perform routine laboratory duties and progressively more complex tasks under the direction of senior staff, including sample processing and basic histology work.
  • Support scientists with sample analysis and case handling, ensuring work is completed accurately and within required timeframes in a busy, high-volume setting.
  • Use technical knowledge to identify and resolve workflow or method issues, and contribute to improvements that strengthen service delivery.
  • Depending on experience, help train less experienced staff, support the development of forensic and scientific procedures, and take part in quality and service improvement activities.
  • Report results to senior staff and key stakeholders, including information connected to the National Criminal Investigation DNA Database, and provide factual court evidence about work completed if required.
  • Take part in team activities, including supporting the introduction of new technologies and new processes in the work area.
  • Build technical capability through ongoing professional development.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively within the forensic biology team and with internal and external clients and stakeholders.
  • Provide test results and technical advice to team members, clients, and other key stakeholders.
  • Contribute to quality improvement activities in line with NATA/ISO accreditation and certification requirements that support stronger forensic biology service delivery.

Technical skills and capabilities

  • Working knowledge of, or the ability to quickly learn, laboratory procedures used in forensic biology and DNA analysis.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and quality management requirements in a NATA-accredited laboratory, with a mindset focused on continuous improvement.
  • Capability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team, both independently and with supervision, to deliver productive output.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to choose and apply the correct standard operating procedure for technical issues.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills for working with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Commitment to organisational goals, including ethical conduct and support for sound human resource practices.
