Role Overview

The Food Service Officer position involves maintaining custody, care, and control of inmates or detainees engaged in food service activities. Responsibilities include supervising detainees during food preparation, enforcing facility policies, and supporting safety and security within a correctional environment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee detainees assigned to food service tasks, ensuring proper food preparation, sanitation, and cleanup.
  • Monitor inmate movements, conduct counts, and respond swiftly to emergencies.
  • Conduct contraband shakedown operations individually or as part of a team in line with policy.
  • Initiate disciplinary actions when necessary and keep detailed reports and logs.
  • Provide prompt assistance for injuries, illnesses, or emotional issues among detainees.
  • Maintain facility safety, cleanliness, and report maintenance needs.
  • Participate as a member of emergency response teams.
  • Complete all required training as per facility and company standards.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent mandatory.
  • Successful completion of GEO and facility-mandated training including ACA standards.
  • Experience in food service, preferably commercial or institutional meal preparation.
  • Preferred coursework or advanced training in behavioral sciences, correctional services, or related fields.
  • Preferred training in cultural diversity or sensitivity.
  • Meet applicable state employment requirements and licensing where applicable.
  • Ability to work overtime and extended shifts up to 16 hours in a 24-hour period.
  • Physical and mental endurance for the demands of the role.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality required.
  • Preferred experience in correctional settings.
  • May require a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must demonstrate maturity, flexibility, high tolerance for mental stress, and earn respect from detainees and colleagues.
