Position Overview

This fixed-term 0.53 full-time equivalent postgraduate fellowship, based within the Department of Ophthalmology at Westmead Hospital, focuses on advanced subspecialty training in glaucoma care. The department functions as a comprehensive multidisciplinary service offering outpatient and inpatient evaluations, surgical ophthalmic procedures, and community-centered chronic eye disease management.

Service Details

The multidisciplinary team includes medical professionals, nursing staff, allied health (orthoptists), administrative personnel, community care staff, and managers, collaboratively managing high patient volumes of approximately 28,000 outpatient visits, 2,000 surgeries, and 700 community-based services annually. The outpatient clinic addresses acute, chronic, and emergency eye conditions alongside routine and emergency ophthalmic surgeries, operating a 24/7 on-call system for Westmead Hospital.

The Community Eye Care (CEYEC) clinic provides innovative, community-based chronic eye care for patients requiring ongoing monitoring but who do not meet acute hospital admission criteria. Referrals to the service are accepted externally from GPs, optometrists, and private ophthalmologists, and internally from various hospital departments including emergency and inpatient services.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Conduct ophthalmology clinics specializing in glaucoma.
• Perform required operative procedures to a high standard.
• Supervise registrars and residents in clinical settings.
• Engage in educational and teaching activities within the department.
• Potentially obtain credentialing and privileges across other facilities within the Western Sydney Local Health District.

Appointment Details

The fellowship term begins on February 1, 2027, for a duration of 12 months. Employment conditions align with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.

Candidate Requirements

• Possession or eligibility for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology (RANZCO) or an equivalent qualification within 12 months as per Staff Specialists Award.
• Non-resident applicants must demonstrate English proficiency (IELTS score of 7.0 or above) in accordance with AHPRA and NSW Health provisional registration standards.
• Strong clinical knowledge in glaucoma and ophthalmology illustrated by relevant clinical experience.
• Expertise in ophthalmic surgery with an interest in glaucoma treatment and operative procedures.
• Professional skills expected from a senior medical practitioner including effective teamwork, communication with patients and colleagues, organizational capabilities, supervision, and building respectful relationships.
• Commitment to maintaining and enhancing professional skills and participating in quality assurance and research translation activities for patient safety improvement.
• Efficient time and resource management contributing to health system effectiveness.
• Demonstrated clinical leadership qualities such as systems thinking, risk management, resilience, personal integrity, fostering relationships, and leading others toward results and good governance.
• Active engagement in education, training, and relevant research.
• Provision of a valid Working with Children Check clearance issued by the Office of Communities Commission for Children and Young People.
