Financial Accountant

Overview

Wrisk Europe GmbH, a branch of the UK insurtech leader Wrisk, is recruiting a Financial Accountant to bolster the growth of its European Managing General Agent (MGA) operations. This position is based in Munich and acts as the main finance liaison for Germany, handling local financial duties and supporting broader expansion efforts across the European Union.

Role Details

This role demands a qualified accountant with robust technical skills who can manage a diverse portfolio of responsibilities. As the sole finance professional in Germany, the candidate must be proactive, collaborate well, and independently handle finance operations while coordinating with the wider Finance team and relevant business stakeholders.

Key Functions

• Manage cash flows, bordereaux processes, and financial reporting under German GAAP, while delivering monthly group reports in partnership with external accountants.
• Reconcile bordereaux against platform policy details, ensuring accurate reporting to insurers and OEM partners.
• Verify customer payments and ensure insurer payments comply with contractual obligations.
• Handle finance administrative tasks such as supplier payments, invoice postings, and staff expense management.
• Prepare and track financial KPIs, reporting any deviations clearly.
• Develop cash flow forecasts and manage company liquidity effectively.
• Ensure tax compliance locally with the assistance of third-party advisors covering VAT, Corporate Tax, and Transfer Pricing.
• Support insurer and statutory audits by providing necessary financial evidence.

Qualifications and Experience

• Degree or qualification in finance, accounting, or related fields.
• Experience in insurance finance, specifically with MGAs, brokers, or insurers, including bordereaux, premium collections, and reconciliations.
• Proven background in a high-functioning finance department responsible for precise financial reporting and controls.
• Familiarity with German GAAP (HGB) accounting and statutory reporting standards.
• Strong grasp of cash flow management, premium reconciliation, and internal financial controls in insurance contexts.
• Competency in preparing management reports, KPIs, variance analysis to facilitate business decisions.
• Exceptional attention to detail with investigative skills to resolve discrepancies and ensure accurate data.
• Ability to independently oversee finances and assume primary responsibility for Germany's finance operations.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities for collaboration with internal and external stakeholders including insurers, advisors, and the Finance team.
• Advanced Excel and financial system proficiency for data analysis and reporting enhancement.
• Fluency in English is mandatory.

• Experience in start-up, scale-up, or rapidly expanding international companies.
• Knowledge of regulated insurance businesses and regulatory reporting requirements.
• Track record of managing finance as the sole representative at a location or entity.
• Experience working with external accountants, auditors, tax consultants, and similar stakeholders.
• Understanding of German VAT, corporate tax, and transfer pricing.
• Skills in finance automation, reporting tools, SQL, and financial reporting process improvements.
