Role overview
This position is responsible for keeping the Engineering Department running smoothly in line with Hyatt standards while meeting the expectations of employees, guests and owners. The role supports the Director of Engineering and Assistant Director of Engineering in maintaining the reliability, safety and performance of hotel facilities, equipment and engineering systems.
Key responsibilities
- Help position Grand Hyatt Singapore as a top-performing hotel by meeting engineering KPIs, guest satisfaction goals and audit standards.
- Support the day-to-day efficiency of the Engineering Department and its contribution to overall hotel operations.
- Coordinate engineering work with other departments so maintenance and operational issues are resolved quickly.
- Make sure all engineering activities are performed safely, efficiently and in line with hotel policies, local laws and regulatory obligations.
- Carry out routine inspections of facilities, equipment and systems to keep performance at an optimum level and spot areas for improvement.
- Assist senior engineering leadership in organising, controlling and managing all engineering activities.
- Lead service recovery efforts when engineering or maintenance issues affect guests.
- Take on assigned duties from the Director of Engineering and Assistant Director of Engineering as needed.
Engineering operations and maintenance
- Oversee repair, maintenance and engineering work according to department standards.
- Track and ensure the effectiveness of the hotel’s preventive maintenance programme.
- Ensure guest rooms, public spaces, back-of-house areas and engineering systems are properly maintained.
- Monitor the status of operating equipment and building infrastructure through regular checks.
- Confirm that fire, life safety and security systems remain functional and compliant.
- Support energy-saving initiatives that improve efficiency and sustainability.
- Keep work areas safe, tidy and well organised.
- Review and approve invoices, purchase requests and procurement for technical services, machinery, equipment and spare parts.
- Manage contractors and vendors so work is completed safely, professionally and to hotel standards.
- Ensure compliance with local building, safety, fire and engineering requirements, and escalate non-compliance where needed.
- Partner with department heads to support hotel operations and enhance the guest experience.
- Perform any additional engineering-related duties assigned by senior leadership.
Leadership and people management
- Support hiring and selection activities for the Engineering Department when required.
- Coach, train and mentor engineering associates to build capability and performance.
- Ensure team members maintain strong standards of professionalism, grooming and attendance.
- Assist with manpower planning and work schedule preparation based on operational needs.
- Hold regular performance conversations and help associates progress toward development goals.
- Encourage teamwork and cross-department collaboration to contribute to hotel success.
- Make sure associates understand and follow hotel policies, procedures, safety rules and Hyatt values.
- Promote a positive team culture and support colleague engagement initiatives.
Qualifications
Because of Singapore’s foreign worker work pass rules, this role is open only to Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents.
- A Degree or Diploma in Engineering or a related field is preferred.
- At least 3 years of experience in engineering operations or maintenance management, ideally in hospitality, commercial buildings or facilities management.
- Solid understanding of building systems, mechanical and electrical services, preventive maintenance and engineering operations.
- Good knowledge of local statutory requirements, fire and life safety regulations, and compliance standards.
- Proven experience leading engineering teams and managing contractors.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving and decision-making ability.
- Comfortable handling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Results-focused with strong operational, administrative and interpersonal capabilities.
- Able to work well with stakeholders across different departments.
- Capable of working independently while maintaining high service and operational standards.
