Commonwealth Bank is hiring multiple Data Scientists for its People Analytics function, based in Sydney or Melbourne. This role is focused on using data, AI and analytics to help shape workforce decisions and improve employee experiences.

What you will do

In this position, you will help build data science and AI solutions that improve workforce decision-making. You will work with large, complex workforce datasets, apply statistical and modelling techniques, and support the development, testing and rollout of machine learning and generative AI solutions.

As part of the People Analytics Chapter, you will work closely with data scientists, data engineers, platform teams and business stakeholders to deliver solutions that are reliable, well governed and aligned to business goals.

Key responsibilities

• Work with HR partners, business stakeholders and teammates to turn workforce problems into analytical, machine learning and generative AI opportunities.
• Create AI and data science solutions that support priorities such as skills, capability, workforce planning, employee experience, mobility and organisational effectiveness.
• Work with large workforce datasets by preparing, cleaning, transforming and analysing them, including feature engineering, modelling, validation and interpretation.
• Design, test and assess machine learning and generative AI models using suitable statistical techniques, performance measures and responsible AI standards.
• Help deploy, monitor and continuously improve ML models and analytics solutions alongside senior data scientists and MLOps specialists.
• Use cloud services, data science tools and software engineering practices to build scalable and maintainable analytical assets.
• Use generative AI tools to support coding, analysis, prompt creation, summarisation and the blending of AI outputs with human judgement.
• Convert analytical findings into clear stories, dashboards, reports and recommendations for HR leaders, Centres of Excellence and other business stakeholders.
• Follow ethical, privacy-conscious and explainable AI practices when handling sensitive people data.
• Build reusable code, documentation, analytical frameworks and shared knowledge within the People Analytics Chapter.
• Support and coach junior data scientists and analysts to help grow data science and AI capability across the team.

What the team is looking for

The ideal candidate brings strong grounding in statistical modelling, machine learning, generative AI and applied data science. You should be comfortable working with Python or R, SQL and modern data science workflows on large, complex datasets.

Experience with the AWS ecosystem and cloud-based data science workflows is preferred, including tools such as S3, SageMaker, Bedrock, Lambda and Glue or similar analytics and ML services. You should also have hands-on exposure to building, evaluating or integrating machine learning models, LLMs, generative AI APIs or AI-enabled solutions.

You will need to clean and prepare complex data for modelling, understand responsible AI, privacy and explainability, and convert business questions into practical analytical solutions. Strong communication skills are important so you can explain technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Experience with BI and visualisation tools such as Tableau or Power BI is valued, along with curiosity about the future of work, workforce transformation and the role of AI in employee experience. A collaborative approach, attention to detail and comfort with ambiguity are also important. Familiarity with Git, cloud platforms, MLOps and software engineering practices is an advantage.
