Role Overview

This full-time, permanent role is primarily based at Downer's Penrose depot in Auckland, with options to be located in Hamilton, Taranaki, Taupo or Tauranga. The Civil Estimator will be responsible for developing accurate and competitive cost estimates for various bids, including project work and maintenance contracts, while ensuring alignment with company profitability goals.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Analyze tender documents and develop precise estimates for bids within the transport and infrastructure sectors.
• Determine current market rates, assess assets, identify subcontractor needs, and perform first principle pricing.
• Collaborate with internal financial analysts, business development, and operations teams to produce compliant and competitive bids following Downer’s governance and approval processes.
• Facilitate smooth handover of all relevant bid information to business development and operational personnel after contract award.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

• Proven background in civil estimating within infrastructure, utilities, and transport sectors.
• Experience working in structured New Zealand civil tendering environments.
• Strong knowledge of civil construction methods and asset components with hands-on site experience favored.
• Maintenance contract tendering experience is a plus.
• Proficiency in proprietary estimating software tools such as CANDY or Benchmark.
• Advanced skills in Excel and strong commercial, numerical, and analytical capabilities.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Understanding and application of first principles of estimating are essential.
• High-level negotiation, analytical aptitude, and sound project management knowledge.
• Ability to work efficiently under pressure and manage time effectively.
