About the Team
Mersey Community Hospital in Latrobe has 95 beds and delivers a broad range of general and specialist health services, including a 24-hour emergency department, general medicine, day surgery, endoscopy, rehabilitation, palliative care, and day oncology services. The facility also hosts specialist clinics covering Dental Surgery, Gynaecology, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, and Endoscopy. As a dedicated elective surgery centre, it fosters close connections with the University of Tasmania Rural Clinical School and TAFE Tasmania, supporting comprehensive clinical training programs. The departments collaborate closely to maintain high-quality healthcare outcomes for patients and the community.
Role Summary
The Central Sterilising Department (CSD) Technician plays a vital role within the healthcare team by ensuring all reusable medical devices (RMDs) are appropriately decontaminated, packaged, sterilised, and distributed to surgical and specialist units. The position is primarily based at Mersey Community Hospital, with occasional casual shifts available at North West Regional Hospital depending on operational needs.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Carry out thorough cleaning, packaging, sterilisation, and distribution of reusable medical equipment for diverse hospital departments including Operating Theatre.
- Maintain a hygienic and clean environment within the Sterilising Department to support effective infection control practices.
- Work proactively to learn the organisational protocols for RMD maintenance and execute correct processing procedures in line with established health standards.
Candidate Requirements
- Relevant academic qualifications or experience in sterilising technology, or willingness to pursue applicable Sterilising Services training.
- Demonstrated ability to uphold cleanliness standards for equipment and workspace adhering to Infection Control guidelines.
- Capacity to understand various RMDs used within the organisation and apply appropriate sterilisation and handling procedures.
- Previous healthcare experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
Appointment Details and Additional Information
- This is a fixed-term casual contract expected to last about 12 months, with work hours negotiated between the employer and employee.
- The position's salary ranges from $70,033 to $75,114 annually (pro-rata), excluding a 12% employer superannuation contribution.
- Salary adheres to the Health and Human Services (Tasmanian State Service) Award, Level 3 for Operational Health Officers.
