Role Overview
Brownells, through 2nd Adventure Services, is hiring a Category Manager to lead selected firearms and OEM gun replacement part categories that support both Brownells’ online business and Crow Wholesale’s distribution business. This is a practical, metrics-driven role for someone who understands the firearms customer, can partner effectively with suppliers, and uses category insights to improve sales, margin, inventory productivity, and the overall customer experience.
2nd Adventure Services serves as a shared services group for a family of businesses that includes Brownells, Crow Wholesale, AR15.COM, and Big Springs Shooting Complex. The organization’s purpose is to build a platform that connects people with their passions and helps them stay inspired, educated, and equipped for a lifetime of adventure.
Location
The preferred base is Grinnell, Iowa, and hybrid working is available. Applicants must already live in Iowa, North Carolina, Minnesota, or Florida, or be open to moving to Iowa.
Compensation
The starting salary is $75,000, with adjustments based on experience. A bonus opportunity is also available and tied to company performance.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will own your assigned categories end to end, from strategy development through execution. You will work with suppliers, review category performance, refine assortment decisions, launch new products, and create promotional plans based on data and business priorities.
- Take full ownership of firearms and OEM gun replacement part categories across Brownells eCommerce and Crow Wholesale distribution channels.
- Create and execute assortment strategies that support growth in sales, gross margin, customer demand, inventory productivity, and overall category KPIs.
- Handle vendor relationships, supplier plans, line reviews, category reviews, and promotional opportunities.
- Review sales, margin, stock turns, customer demand, promotion results, vendor performance, and SKU-level patterns to identify action points.
- Recommend pricing actions, promotional changes, assortment expansion, product elimination, discontinuations, and new product introductions.
- Work closely with Merchandising, Crow Sales, Brownells Marketing, Supply Chain, Operations, Finance, and external suppliers to implement category plans.
- Develop and apply category review materials, margin analyses, promotional assessments, supplier scorecards, and SKU-level recommendations.
What We’re Looking For
This position is intended for someone who can independently manage categories and drive commercial outcomes rather than simply support merchandising work.
- 4 to 6+ years of experience in category management, merchandising, buying, retail, eCommerce, distribution, vendor or product management, inventory planning, or a similar commercial function.
- Prior exposure to firearms, shooting sports, hunting, outdoor, tactical, hard goods, or a comparable enthusiast market is strongly preferred.
- Background in managing product categories, supplier relationships, pricing, promotions, assortment choices, or product lifecycle decisions.
- Strong analytical ability and the capability to translate sales, margin, inventory, promotional, customer, and SKU data into clear business recommendations.
- Solid Excel skills and comfort with business reporting tools; Power BI experience is highly desirable.
- Ability to collaborate across Merchandising, Sales, Marketing, Supply Chain, Operations, Finance, and supplier teams.
- Strong accountability, organization, communication, attention to detail, and follow-through.
Success Measures
Success in this position means taking true ownership of the category, building stronger vendor plans, improving performance in weaker categories, removing low-performing SKUs, increasing margin and inventory productivity, strengthening promotional planning, and helping new product launches land more effectively.
Additional Information
This is a full-time onsite role with hybrid flexibility in the preferred location. The company is seeking a commercially minded Category Manager who understands the firearms customer, enjoys managing supplier relationships, and is motivated by delivering measurable business results.
