About the Organization
The Chesterfield County Department of Transportation (CDOT) comprises a team dedicated to delivering excellence in transportation engineering and managing a wide array of projects from small pedestrian crosswalks to major highways and bridges. CDOT collaborates closely with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), which oversees assets after project completion.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Transportation Engineer to manage various infrastructure projects, taking on increasing responsibilities over time. Reporting to a Principal Engineer, the role offers support and opportunities to influence transportation safety and efficiency enhancements.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research, analysis, and evaluation of transportation projects and initiatives.
- Work alongside other engineers to devise and apply innovative solutions addressing transportation-related challenges.
- Oversee consultants and contractors throughout all project phases from initiation to construction completion and closeout.
- Engage with community members, government bodies, and partners to collect feedback and foster support for transportation initiatives.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or at least four years of relevant professional experience, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
- Preferred certification includes Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer in Training (EIT).
- Strong analytical capabilities with high attention to detail.
- Motivated by quality work and continuous growth.
- Creative problem-solving and adaptability in diverse situations.
- Effective time management competencies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication as well as interpersonal skills.
- Comfortable presenting at public meetings or hearings.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and familiarity with transportation and engineering software is desirable.
- Knowledgeable in Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and VDOT standards, procedures, and specifications.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record as per Virginia DMV standards, and provide a driving history for at least three years within thirty days of interview.
- Successful candidates must pass pre-employment drug screening, FBI criminal background check, and education verification.
Salary and Benefits
The salary for this position ranges between $75,000 and $90,000 annually, with starting pay based on relevant experience. Work Schedule and Location
This is a full-time, onsite role based in Chesterfield, Virginia, with working hours from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
