Job description

About the Position

The Middle East Institute (MEI), part of the National University of Singapore located on Kent Ridge Campus, seeks exceptional individuals to join as Research Fellows. Situated strategically between the Middle East and East Asia, MEI emphasizes research bridging these regions with a focus on geopolitical and economic transformations.

Key Focus Areas

  • Geopolitical and global dynamics involving the Middle East, including countries such as China, Iran, and Turkey.
  • Economic developments in Gulf states alongside their ongoing social, religious, and cultural reforms.

Responsibilities

  • Engage actively in assigned research clusters, potentially leading projects aligned with the Institute's goals.
  • Support organizing academic events including workshops and conferences.
  • Participate in outreach efforts designed to promote the Institute’s work.
  • Regularly contribute to academic publications, including peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and internal reports.
  • Produce detailed analyses of current events for stakeholders and edit thematic papers for quarterly releases.
  • Provide brief commentaries for social media channels and respond to media requests at local and international levels as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Applicants should have completed a PhD from a recognized university; candidates nearing completion may apply, but must have their degree conferred before joining, verified by an official university letter.

Terms and Conditions

  • This is a fixed-term appointment lasting two years.
  • Compensation includes a fixed monthly salary covering stipends for housing and living expenses.
  • A one-time payment for travel assistance is provided; however, housing is not provided and must be arranged independently by the fellow.
  • Salary and any benefits are subject to Singapore tax regulations.
  • Support is available for research fieldwork and attending conferences.
