Established in 2020 and based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 3DBioFibR Inc. is an emerging biotechnology company focused on producing high-quality biofibers. Leveraging patented dry-spinning technology, the company manufactures collagen fibers that closely mimic the biomechanical and biochemical attributes of natural collagen. These fibers are produced at commercial scales and serve various tissue engineering applications including 3D bioprinting additives, hydrogels, and cellular scaffolds for both 2D and 3D cell cultures.

Role Overview

The Research Associate will engage full-time at the Dartmouth, Nova Scotia facility, collaborating with scientists, engineers, and cross-disciplinary teams to support research, development, and optimization of biomaterials and production processes. Reporting directly to the Research Lead, the role involves experimental execution, data analysis, documentation, and aiding the transition of innovations from research to manufacturing readiness.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and perform laboratory experiments aligned with approved protocols and project goals.
• Prepare, process, and analyze biomaterials and related research samples.
• Contribute to development, process enhancement, and scale-up of manufacturing workflows.
• Conduct physical and mechanical assessments of materials.
• Gather, assess, and report experimental findings.
• Resolve technical issues and suggest improvements to processes.
• Support technology transfer activities between research and design teams.
• Maintain a safe, orderly laboratory space.
• Prepare reagents, buffers, and test solutions as needed.
• Operate and upkeep laboratory instruments, including calibration and routine maintenance.
• Manage inventory and coordinate acquisition of lab supplies.
• Properly handle, store, and dispose of chemicals and research materials.
• Keep comprehensive and timely electronic laboratory records (ELN).
• Draft technical documentation such as reports, protocols, and experiment summaries.
• Follow SOPs and work instructions strictly.
• Assist in revising and formulating laboratory documentation.
• Participate in investigations, corrective actions, and continuous improvement processes.
• Ensure activities comply with the company’s Quality Management System.

Candidate Qualifications

• Between 1 and 3 years of laboratory experience in either academic or industrial environments.
• Proven ability to conduct laboratory experiments and maintain documentation of results.
• Preferred experience includes biomaterials, polymers, tissue engineering, biotechnology, textile engineering, or medical device sectors.
• Familiarity with Quality Management Systems such as ISO 9001 or ISO 13485 is advantageous.
• Additional skills that will enhance candidacy: biomaterial processing, polymer science, mechanical testing, microscopy/imaging, laboratory instrumentation maintenance, statistical data analysis, Microsoft Office proficiency, and electronic laboratory notebook usage.
