Overview
The Network Operations Technician at NexGen Networks plays a vital role in managing and supporting carrier-class TDM and TCP/IP networks. This position focuses on building, configuring, and troubleshooting essential network components to ensure smooth operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor, diagnose, repair, and maintain carrier-grade network elements at NexGen Networks.
- Maintain assigned systems within normal operational limits.
- Identify and resolve network issues flagged by network management system (NMS) events, logs, or customer complaints.
- Initiate proactive troubleshooting and corrective measures upon receiving network alerts or customer feedback.
- Act as the main liaison for all customer trouble inquiries related to the network.
- Escalate and communicate support tickets to engineering or operations teams following SLA guidelines.
- Create TAC cases and trouble tickets with partner carriers and equipment vendors.
- Participate in rotating shifts including off-hours in a 24/7 operational environment.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
- Strong commitment to work and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Capable of working independently while also receptive to guidance, training, and constructive criticism.
- Excellent analytical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication capabilities.
- Familiarity with Visio and Excel is advantageous.
- 1-2 years of practical experience within telecommunications or related industries, or alternatively a four-year degree as a substitute.
- Understanding of core telecommunications practices and procedures.
- Hands-on experience or knowledge in SONET, IP subnetting and routing, Layer 2 switching, DWDM, dark fiber services, and OTDR testing.
- Experience working with equipment platforms such as Nortel 6500, Cisco routers and switches, Juniper MX and EX series, Cisco ONS, and Lucent DMX.
- Additional knowledge of BGP, IPv6, and Junos is considered a plus.
Education and Experience Requirements
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and 1-2 years relevant work experience is required.
- Vendor certifications like CCNA or JNCIA are beneficial.
- Ability to work a 24/7 schedule including mandatory weekend shifts.
