About the National Marine Aquarium and the Role

The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, operated by the Ocean Conservation Trust, has been fostering ocean awareness for over two decades. It features three large aquarium displays themed around native UK marine life, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Caribbean, ranging from 500,000 to 2.5 million litres in volume. We aim to promote a world with healthy oceans supporting all life and encourage the public to connect deeply with marine environments.

Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Lead Biologist and Diver to manage all three exhibition areas. This senior role involves upholding high standards, enhancing the displays, refining husbandry techniques, and establishing care protocols. The position is ideal for a professional with significant experience in aquarium leadership who is passionate about marine conservation and public engagement.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations and maintenance of three large marine exhibits.
• Develop and improve animal care and husbandry protocols.
• Provide leadership and support to junior staff and volunteers.
• Ensure excellent record keeping and reporting standards.
• Support diving operations related to exhibit maintenance and animal welfare.

Candidate Profile

• At least four years of aquarium experience with practical hands-on skills.
• Proficiency in DIY tasks related to exhibit upkeep.
• Confidence and passion for marine conservation and the aquarium sector.
• Prior supervisory experience, including team leadership.
• Diving qualification such as PADI Dive Master (or similar) is preferred but not mandatory.

Work Conditions and Schedule

This is a full-time role requiring 37.5 hours per week. The position involves working on a rotating annual schedule that ensures coverage seven days a week, including weekends, public holidays, and school holidays. Flexibility and availability during these times are essential to provide exemplary animal care and exhibit maintenance.
