Job Purpose
The primary responsibility of the First Officer is to oversee the assigned flights by adhering to the Airline’s Operational Manual and applicable civil aviation authority regulations, supporting the Captain to ensure maximum safety, security, and operational efficiency. This includes maintaining thorough documentation, assisting flight and cabin crew, implementing emergency procedures as needed, and taking control of the flight when instructed.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as either ‘Pilot Flying’ or ‘Pilot Monitoring’, supporting the Captain in managing flight deck operations, directing monitoring of flight progress, aircraft system performance, and crew activity, ensuring effective task allocation and communication.
- Operate the aircraft between destinations upon Captain's directive, prioritizing safety, operational efficiency, and passenger comfort.
- Execute flights in line with Airlines’ Operations Manual and aviation regulations, constantly applying and overseeing required procedures for safe and smooth operation.
- Coordinate with the Captain and Dispatch Team before each flight to prepare flight and cabin crew, sharing critical information such as technical aircraft status, weather, fuel requirements, route planning, weight distribution, and role assignments.
- Perform essential pre-flight checks and handle documentation tasks, including take-off data validation, fuel calculations, ATS flight plans, and record keeping.
- Utilize established forms and systems to log operational data accurately, validate calculations, and acquire required Captain approvals.
- Where qualified personnel are unavailable, supervise aircraft fueling operations, ensuring appropriate fuel type and proper distribution.
- Alert the Captain to any irregularities potentially impacting flight safety and assist crew in executing necessary responses to safety or security concerns.
- Undertake additional ground roles such as Safety Officer or Security Officer as assigned and in accordance with the Airline’s Operations Manual.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements from civil aviation authorities, Airbus standards, and other relevant regulatory entities. Participate in recurrent and competency-based training programs organized by the Training Department.
- Ensure all required manuals, charts, maps, and forms are current, properly distributed, accounted for, and adhered to by Flight Crew; safeguard the aircraft at remote stations until return to base if necessary.
- Support the Captain in completing voyage reports, flight logs, and safety or discretion reports, safely depositing all flight documents post-flight.
Qualification Requirements
- Must hold a valid ATPL License or a CPL License with Frozen ATPL status.
- Successful completion of technical and psychometric assessments for Second Officers as per Airline and civil aviation authority standards.
- Medical fitness clearance appropriate for Second Officers according to Airline and regulatory standards.
- Essential training in safety and emergency response; formal qualifications considered an advantage.
- Training in airport security procedures is beneficial.
- Crew Resource Management training is preferred.
- Knowledge of IATA security principles and standards is advantageous.
- Proficiency in aircraft systems operations and skilled use of Microsoft Office, internet, and web research.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities, including technical report writing and presentations.
- Fluency in English required; familiarity with Arabic and French languages is an asset.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 1500 flying hours, ideally with experience on Airbus 320 aircraft.
- Experience in a low-cost airline environment is highly desirable.
- Thorough understanding of aircraft systems and operating procedures.
- Capability to perform additional roles such as safety or security as mandated by the airline and civil aviation authorities.
- Exposure to quality assurance, safety, security, and audit procedures impacting flight operations.
- Adeptness at applying standardized policies, procedures, and manuals as per regulations.
- Ability to perform effectively under varying and demanding workloads including unexpected scenarios.
- Calm, confident, and focused with strong emergency and threat management skills.
- Competent in data analysis, identification of operational anomalies, and proposing solutions.
- Cost-conscious with solid problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Combination of technical aptitude and interpersonal skills to support organizational goals.
- Demonstrates consistent delivery on business strategies and key performance indicators.
