Job description

About Bank of New Zealand and Engineering Excellence Team

At Bank of New Zealand (BNZ), beyond traditional banking services, we foster a collaborative and agile environment that strives to innovate through our guiding principle: "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way." Our culture supports wellbeing, flexible work arrangements, and generous leave benefits, with plentiful opportunities for professional growth and career advancement. The work environment is dynamic and ever-changing.

The Engineering Excellence team is a newly created group within BNZ Technology that focuses on elevating engineering practices to deliver simpler, safer, and more robust technology solutions. This team reduces friction, promotes consistent design and build methodologies, and empowers teams to make more confident engineering decisions. As artificial intelligence increasingly integrates into technology workflows, this role will shape safe and pragmatic AI adoption to enhance interface design, uphold rigorous standards, support governance, and accelerate engineering capabilities.

Role Overview

The Enterprise Interface Lead plays a crucial role in shaping the design, governance, and evolution of BNZ's enterprise interfaces and APIs. This leadership position spans the entire organization and revolves around establishing best practices for interface design, API standards, and integration patterns. Instead of managing delivery for specific platforms or domains, the role sets strategic direction, provides expert guidance, and leads governance and enablement procedures to help teams design integrations that are simpler, safer, and more resilient. The position relies on influence, enablement, and evidence-based leadership rather than formal authority.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Create and refine enterprise-wide interface and API standards, patterns, and reusable components.
  • Lead the governance process for enterprise interfaces, ensuring integration decisions balance consistency, risk-awareness, and proportionality.
  • Develop straightforward decision-making pathways and guardrails so teams know when and how integration choices undergo review.
  • Offer pragmatic advice on interface design trade-offs, evaluate designs, and assist teams in making well-informed decisions.
  • Collaborate with Architecture and Platform teams to align interface standards, governance mechanisms, and enterprise objectives.
  • Promote adoption of interface standards through various enablement efforts including playbooks, templates, guidance materials, and communities of practice.
  • Enhance resilience, observability, and incident-readiness criteria for critical integrations.
  • Ensure governance frameworks are lightweight, transparent, and focused on outcomes rather than mere compliance.
  • Work in partnership to embed interface expectations within standards, tools, and delivery workflows.

Collaboration and Impact

The role works closely with Architecture, Platform, and delivery teams to minimize integration-related friction and operational risks, while enabling rapid team progress. Success depends heavily on coaching, influence, and clear decision frameworks instead of hierarchical authority.

A fundamental focus is evolving BNZ’s interface engineering craft and governance model, by clarifying expectations, leading governance processes, and supporting skill development and career growth within integration-specific engineering roles.

Key Initiatives

  • Standardize interface and API patterns across multiple delivery teams.
  • Establish a trusted and effective governance model facilitating prompt, high-quality decisions.
  • Improve consistency in how teams design, expose, and consume interfaces.
  • Reduce unnecessary complexity and technical debt within integrations.
  • Strengthen monitoring and operational preparedness for critical data flows and APIs.
  • Support platform modernization with clear, practical integration standards and governance.
  • Facilitate transition away from custom integration methods towards reusable, well-defined patterns.

Definition of Success

Success is characterized by widespread, consistent usage of well-understood interface and API patterns across the technology function, backed by governance processes that teams trust. Integration decisions become more transparent and efficient, operational metrics improve due to greater resilience and observability, and preventable integration problems decline. Engineers clearly understand expectations, decision pathways are accessible, and governance is perceived as an empowering enabler instead of an obstructive barrier.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated capability to influence and guide decisions without formal authority.
  • Strong communication skills suitable for technical discussions and executive leadership.
  • Robust technical knowledge of enterprise integration and interface design.
  • Experience implementing or managing integration standards and governance in complex or regulated settings.
  • Comprehensive understanding of modern integration techniques, such as service- and event-driven architectures.
  • Operationally focused mindset including knowledge of resilience, observability, and incident readiness.
  • Balanced, delivery-aware governance approach that harmonizes enterprise consistency with local team needs.

Additional Information

Joining BNZ offers a challenging yet rewarding opportunity to be part of a bold and growing company culture dedicated to helping New Zealanders find their financial path. The team embraces the Maori proverb "Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini," reminding us that success stems from collective effort.
