About the company
Grafana Labs builds the open observability cloud and is guided by open source, open standards, open ecosystems, and an open culture. Grafana Cloud is its fully managed observability platform, designed to scale and help organizations make sense of distributed data with practical AI support. The company serves 35 million+ users and 7,000+ customers, including Anthropic, Bloomberg, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Salesforce.
Grafana Labs operates as a fully remote organization with 1,600+ people across 40+ countries. Its culture emphasizes transparency, autonomy, collaboration, and meaningful work. The company is backed by Lightspeed Venture Partners, Sequoia Capital, GIC, Coatue, J.P. Morgan, CapitalG, and Lead Edge Capital.
This role is for an Engineering Manager on the Platform team, focused on Usage. It is a remote position open only to candidates based in Germany, Sweden, Spain, Ireland, and the UK.
Role overview
Application Core Services (AppCore) sits within Platform, under the Foundations department. Foundations creates the Internal Engineering Platform (IEP) and works closely with Cloud, Enterprise, and Grafana teams. The group builds the core systems that support Grafana’s business operations and uses grafana.com to create custom integrations and solutions across a complex technical environment.
The Usage squad owns key areas that support both customer-facing workflows and internal business processes. Its responsibilities include the billing engine that calculates customer usage, automated provisioning after contract signature, integrations with cloud marketplaces such as AWS, Azure, and GCP, and the customer portal used to manage accounts.
This team works at the intersection of product, platform, and business operations. The systems are essential to Grafana’s ability to scale, and the company is looking for a leader who can help teams tackle complex workflow and systems challenges, improve reliability and developer experience, and deliver software that serves both customers and internal stakeholders.
Engineering Managers at Grafana Labs may also contribute to open source communities and work across teams beyond their immediate area of ownership.
What you will do
- Lead and develop a distributed engineering team through regular 1:1s, ongoing feedback, performance discussions, and career growth support.
- Work with product management and engineering leadership to define the Usage squad’s roadmap, strategy, and OKRs, keeping them aligned with company goals and customer value.
- Steer projects from early technical design and scoping through delivery and post-release refinement, with strong attention to quality and timelines in the Usage domain, including billing, cost management, and reconciliation systems.
- Coordinate execution across Product, DealOps, GTM, Pricing and Monetization, Support, and nearby AppCore squads to remove blockers and keep work moving across service boundaries.
- Build a team environment centered on trust and security, while encouraging thoughtful use of AI-assisted development to improve workflows and reduce repetitive work.
- Support hiring and talent acquisition efforts alongside People Ops to attract and retain a diverse engineering team.
What will help you succeed
- You have prior experience leading engineers, including regular 1:1s, candid feedback, and supporting growth and performance conversations.
- You lead by setting direction and outcomes, empowering engineers rather than managing tasks in detail.
- You communicate openly and directly, advocate for your team, and address uncertainty or conflict before it becomes a bigger issue.
- You work well in a remote, globally distributed setup and are comfortable collaborating asynchronously across time zones and cultures.
- You are comfortable operating in complex systems environments, including stateful systems, eventual consistency, and reconciliation logic.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience managing software engineering teams.
- At least 3 years of prior experience as an individual contributor in a related engineering role.
- A strong software engineering background, ideally with backend experience such as Go, sufficient to participate credibly in technical design discussions.
- Good understanding of distributed systems concepts, including scalability, fault tolerance, consistency, and observability.
- Proven ability to deliver across multiple concurrent projects, align stakeholders with competing priorities, and communicate risks and timelines clearly.
- Comfort working with autonomous engineering teams.
- Strong customer focus, with technical decisions grounded in user and business impact.
- Comfort and curiosity around AI-assisted tools and integrating AI-powered workflows into the team’s day-to-day work.
Bonus experience
- Hands-on experience with high-volume billing, usage metering, and customer-facing cost management applications.
- Experience building or automating pricing logic, promotions, discounts, rebilling, and usage forgiveness with strong audit trails.
- Familiarity with cloud marketplace integrations and compliance or refactoring work involving IT General Controls or RBAC.
- Experience with SaaS provisioning, tenancy, regional expansion, plugin rollout, or customer lifecycle systems.
- Knowledge of Kubernetes control-plane patterns, operators, reconcilers, or desired-state systems.
- Exposure to observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry.
- Background contributing to or maintaining open source projects.
Compensation and rewards
For candidates in Ireland, the base salary range for this role is EUR 117,000 to EUR 137,000. Final compensation may vary depending on level, experience, and skills demonstrated during the interview process.
This role includes Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), giving team members ownership in Grafana Labs’ success. Compensation ranges are market-specific; if you apply from another location, the recruiter will share the relevant pay range and benefits early in the process.
