Role Overview
The Editor oversees the creation, review, and dissemination of various print and digital publications, carrying out detailed copyediting and proofreading tasks. Working closely with authors and internal teams, this role ensures high-quality editorial outputs while contributing to multiple organizational communication channels. Additionally, the role aids in managing publishing department operations, including customer service and conference bookstore activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead editorial and project management for books, eBooks, digital downloads, and promotional materials, managing timelines, budgets, and stakeholder coordination.
- Collaborate with the Associate Director to prepare editorial agreements and maintain project documentation.
- Develop and update publication guidelines and partner with marketing to promote publications.
- Edit and proofread organizational communications and publications such as newsletters, magazines, and blog posts, maintaining adherence to style guides.
- Manage and update the NAFSA Style Guide based on the Chicago Manual of Style.
- Oversee customer support for the Publications team, including order inquiries and product page maintenance on digital platforms.
- Coordinate inventory and operations for the annual NAFSA Bookstore during the conference, including point of sale and customer assistance.
- Assist the Publishing Services Director with tasks supporting the organization's strategic goals.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, communications, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- At least three years managing projects in a publications or communications setting.
- Exceptional editorial capabilities including writing, editing, and proofreading, paired with graphic design awareness.
- Strong organizational and project management skills to juggle multiple assignments effectively.
- Familiarity with style guidelines, especially the Chicago Manual of Style, and experience maintaining in-house style manuals.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and acquainted with Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, and CMS platforms like Drupal.
- Dedication to the mission of the employing organization.
Preferred Experience
- Prior publishing industry background.
- Experience working in membership associations, nonprofits, or higher education settings.
- Knowledge of international education sectors.
Working Conditions
The role operates during standard office hours with flexible summer timings and occasional travel, particularly for the annual conference. Office work includes prolonged periods of sitting, some light physical activity, and intensive computer use.
Compensation and Benefits
The position offers a target salary of $65,000 for a 35-hour workweek, accompanied by comprehensive benefits such as health and dental insurance, retirement plans with employer contributions, various paid leaves, life and disability coverage, spending accounts, transportation benefits, and access to onsite fitness facilities.
