Economic Policy Trainee (m/f/d)

About the Role

ZOE Institute for Future-Fit Economies is an independent think tank operating in Germany and Brussels, focused on policy-oriented research and advocacy for sustainable economic models. The Economics of a Green and Just Transition team is inviting applications for a trainee to assist with policy development and research across projects that aim to finance and enact a green and socially equitable economic transition. This position supports content creation, analytical research, and policy analysis at the EU level, with a particular focus on projects within Germany’s industrial sector.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive background research and analyze diverse topics relevant to economic policy and sustainability.
• Draft detailed content for various publications including policy briefs and reports.
• Prepare presentations and essential documentation to support communications and stakeholder engagement.
• Create briefing materials to facilitate meetings with stakeholders and policymakers.
• Monitor ongoing economic policy developments and debates at the EU and national levels.
• Assist in planning and coordinating both physical and virtual events.

Requirements

• Fluent proficiency in English and German, both spoken and written.
• Master’s degree in economics, political economy, European studies, or public policy.
• Strong interest in economic policy fields such as fiscal and industrial policies.
• Ability to operate independently while also collaborating effectively within a team.
• Advanced analytical capabilities and a strategic approach to problem-solving.
• Valuing principles of sustainability, self-organization, agility, and ethical orientation.

Additional desirable but not mandatory skills include knowledge of EU and German legislative procedures, qualitative and quantitative research expertise, and residency in Brussels or Berlin.

Conditions and Benefits

The position requires 38 working hours per week over a six-month period starting ideally in October 2026. The role offers remote work options from Germany, the Netherlands, or Belgium, or presence in offices located in Cologne, Berlin, or Brussels.

The gross monthly salary for full-time engagement (38 hours/week) is 2289 euros, with pro-rated compensation if working fewer hours. Employment terms follow the public service collective agreement of the Länder.

Entitlements include 30 days of paid leave annually, additional days off dedicated to volunteering activities, and reimbursement for public transportation costs.
