Job description
Role Overview
Officers in the Defence Forces serve as key leaders and decision-makers. As a Medical Officer, you will provide specialized medical care within the Forces both domestically and overseas. The practice includes health protection and education, primary healthcare, and environmental medicine. This position entails demanding physical and mental challenges. Along with medical responsibilities, you will also lead and manage personnel within the Medical Branch.
Professional Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must have medical qualifications equivalent to M.B., B.Ch, B.A.O., or L.R.C.P. and S.I., and hold current full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland, maintaining this registration throughout service. A minimum of three years of postgraduate experience is required. While not essential, being listed on one of the following Specialist Registers is desirable:
- Emergency Medicine
- Anaesthetics
- General Practice Medicine
- Occupational Medicine
- Psychiatric Specialties
- Public Health Medicine

Application Process
Candidates must submit an online application during advertised competition dates. Eligible applicants will be invited for an interview. Following this, highest scorers will undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation at St. Bricin’s Military Hospital, Dublin, plus security clearance by An Garda Síochána. Passing both assessments is required for induction consideration.
Appointment and Training
Top candidates in the merit order will be commissioned as Captains and Medical Officers within the Defence Forces. All newly commissioned Medical Officers are required to complete a Military Induction course.
Postings
Active Medical Officers will be assigned to Defence Forces Medical Units based on organizational needs. These units are located at:
- Naval Base, Haulbowline, Co. Cork
- Collins Barracks, Cork
- Custume Barracks, Athlone
- Defence Forces Training Centre, Curragh Camp, Co. Kildare
- St. Bricin’s Hospital, Dublin
