O’Donnell Metal Deck LLC operates nationally as a structural steel distributor with over 20 branches, focusing on steel bar joists and metal decks. Position Summary

The Detailer role involves transforming detailed contract documents into precise, comprehensive steel joist and deck layout plans and drawings. Responsibilities include preparing layouts, sections, and material bills that comply with client needs and industry standards, while embodying the company’s dedication to quality.

Key Responsibilities

• Create joist and deck layout plans and sectional views using AutoCAD for customer review and approval.
• Ensure coordination with steel erection drawings for accuracy and constructability.
• Interpret contract drawings, specifications, and change orders thoroughly to guarantee data precision and completeness.
• Draft Requests for Information (RFIs) and collaborate with customers, engineering, and other detailers to clarify project specifics.
• Calculate joist and girder loadings per contractual design documents.
• Develop accurate bills of materials reflecting layout drawings and all design and loading requirements.
• Check the accuracy and completeness of drawings and BOMs individually and in peer reviews.
• Issue finalized construction documents for customer field use.
• Maintain well-organized digital project files accessible across departments.
• Inform Project Management promptly of scope changes due to revised drawings or client requests, updating all records accordingly.
• Work closely with Project Management and relevant stakeholders to address discrepancies and refresh submittals.
• Provide technical support during project erection phases to assist Project Management and customers.
• Maintain professional and clear communication with customers, colleagues, and supervisors.
• Exemplify professionalism with consistent attendance and adherence to company values.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously within a fast-paced, production-oriented setting.
• Undertake additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in Drafting, CAD Technology, or related area; equivalent practical experience considered.
• At least one year of experience using AutoCAD; familiarity with Revit or Bluebeam is advantageous.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
• Ability to comprehend and analyze structural drawings, technical specifications, and documents.
• Knowledge of steel designations on structural plans is highly preferred.
• Capable of detailing complex projects with minimal oversight.
• Strong attention to detail and experienced in reviewing work thoroughly for accuracy.
• Effective written and oral communication skills to collaborate productively within internal and external teams.
